LASIK Malpractice
by bamby willcock - Sunday, 23 March 2008, 05:05 AM
Anyone in the world
By Kevin Stith LASIK, pronounced LAY-sik, is actually an acronym for LAser in SItu Keratomileusis. It is a type of refractive surgery procedure in which the cornea of the eye is reshaped to alter its optical ability. This is being done to correct myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia, LASIK malpractice occurs when the surgeon does not perform the procedure right and results to a damage in the eye or both eyes of the patient. Complications during the surgery can lead to patient complaining of LASIK malpractice. In refractive surgery, there are a few complications the surgeon should anticipate and explain to the patient. Awareness of these complications can help the patient make an informed decision if he wants to continue the procedure or not. Such complications range from problems that are quite negligible to bothersome, the worst case scenario being losing an eye. But since the procedures of refractive surgery are always being refined over and over again, the occurrence of the worst case scenario has actually decreased to almost being nonexistent. However, even small problems continue to disturb some unfortunate patients. One complication of refractive surgery or LASIK is regarding the formation of cataract in the crystalline lens of the eye. They make the lens so foggy that light can no longer pass through to reach the cornea, thus making you temporarily blind. While a cataract can be cured by performing lens implant, this requires additional eye surgery which means having additional risks of infection and damage. Another complication of LASIK is involved in the correction of high amounts of myopia (the scarring of the central cornea) where the laser in the surgery is focused. This scarring serves as a filter of the light passing through the central cornea and, due to the formation of clouds and haze, vision is reduced. The glare and halos that patients usually complain about are also caused by this light diffusion. Finally, the epithelial growth into the cornea stroma is another serious complication of LASIK, producing significant vision problems. This happens when the epithelium lining the front of the cornea begins to develop into the stroma area and gradually invades it. These complications are what eye surgeons should prevent so that they will not be alleged for malpractice. Malpractice provides detailed information on Malpractice, Medical Malpractice, Medical Malpractice Attorney, Dental Malpractice and more. Malpractice is affiliated with Whistleblower Protection Acts. How To Treat Your Body Acne In One Easy Step
by bamby willcock - Wednesday, 19 March 2008, 08:34 PM
Anyone in the world
By Richard Hargreaves Body acne is the general term used for clogged or plugged pores of the skin regardless of which part of the body is affected. In layman's terms, it is usually referred to as blackheads, whiteheads and pimples or bumps on the skin. In more technical or clinical terms, however, it can be classified into six different specific types that range from mild to severe cases. These six types include comedones, papules, pustules, macules, nodules and cysts. Types of Body Acne 1. Comedones This type is considered the 'mildest'. It occurs when the skin's sebacious follicle has been plugged or clogged with dead cells combined with other substances such as oil and bacteria. This type of acne is commonly known as a blackhead or a whitehead. 2. Papules This type of body acne is similar to comedones since they look like small whiteheads up close. They usually appear in clusters, making the affected skin area feel sand-paper rough. 3. Pustules This type is considered more serious than comedones and papules since pustules usually contain pus, which combines substances such as dead skin cells, bacteria and white blood cells. 4. Macules Macules are those red and inflamed marks or spots on the skin that have been left by a recently healed pimple, whitehead or blackhead. This type of acne usually takes weeks or even months to disappear. 5. Nodules This type is considered severe. Though it is similar to the less serious papule, a nodule usually has a deeper root and causes inflammation of the affected area. 6. Cysts This type of body acne is considered the most serious of all types. Besides having a deeper root and causing inflammation, cysts can also result in skin scarring. Body Acne Treatment There is actually no absolute best acne solution that is applicable to everyone. The best acne solution for one person may not be effective for another; thus, one can only seek the body acne treatment that works specifically for his or her situation. However, it does not mean that you should simply go on a trial-and-error test of all available medications for body acne. You should go for one that has a good reputation for curing acne and for this I recommend a 4% Niacinamide Topical cream...such as Acnessential. Niacinamide is derived from Vitamin B3 and 4% topical Niacinamide has been proven, in studies by the State University of New York no less, to be as effective at treating acne as the leading topical prescription medication...Clindamycin. Religion And Technology: Is 21st Century Religion Only A Click Away From God?
by bamby willcock - Sunday, 16 March 2008, 05:25 PM
Anyone in the world

By Bruce Prokopets For centuries, the systems of communications throughout the world have been
swiftly evolving. In the 1400s, the printing press created the ability for mass publication
and circulation of literature, opening the door for the Christian gospel to
reach around the world through books, tracts and the Bible itself. During
the late 1800s, the telegraph and telephone were invented, further spreading
the opportunities for Christian evangelism. In the mid 20th century, radio
and television further advanced that possibility. Now, in the 21st century,
we can literally reach millions live through streaming video. For the
Christian evangelist, there is a truly awesome marriage of religion and
technology. Bishop E. Bernard Jordan, Founder and Chief Prelate of Zoe Ministries, is a
paradigm of this shift from the pew to cyberspace. From the simple input of
information into a database, to carrying religion into all of the world
through technological advances such as live streaming, Bishop Jordan has
moved his ministry from drawing hundreds of people to the pews of the local
church, to drawing millions of people to witness and experience his
prophetic ministry through the wonder of computer technology. His parishioners now have access to the prophetic ministry 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, whether through teachings and messages concerning God,
spirituality and prophecy, or through the ability to purchase books,
teachings and music. According to the Bishop, "Because of the blessing
that computer and internet technology represents, my parishioners are now
only a click away from God; they are only a click away from the
prophetic word." His outreach is truly interactive via special Faith Chat
sessions during live services on Sundays, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday
evenings. Whether it is Jane Danielsen of Denmark, who views the live streaming
telecasts weekly, Lillian Holmgaard of Denmark, who gathers people together
in her community around the computer to view the live telecasts; Carl Ameho
from South Korea who views the telecast several times throughout his day to
experience the power of prophecy or Frans Zegers of the Netherlands who
faithfully views the Power of Prophecy telecast, Bishop Jordans
parishioners are in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Africa
and throughout the world. There is a growing need for leaders in the Church to expand their ministry
and to reach larger groups of people all around the world. The world is
waiting eagerly to hear the spiritual truths that have been burning in the
hearts and minds of many pastors, preachers, evangelists and prophets.
People are in need of an answer, yet the fact is many do not want to
physically go to church. Yet these people are hungry for the word of God.
Therefore, spiritual leaders of all faiths must now open their minds to the
use of the Internet, live streaming and other advanced forms of technology
to get their message to the world. If Jesus, Buddha or Mohammed were to bring their message in this day, they
would use the most advanced means of technology available to communicate
their message to as many people as they could reach. There is a growing concern in urban America about the accessibility of this
powerful and relatively inexpensive technology. Only 25% of
African-Americans appear to be functional in the information age. This
alarming figure can be attributed mainly to the fact that there are more
black males in prison than in college. Many are blue collar workers, whose
jobs limit their access in the arena of technology. Perhaps religion could
possibly bring more exposure to the importance of computers and advanced
technology to a community that has been frozen out of the information age.
If they know that their favorite preacher is available on the Internet via
live streaming, and they have the ability to interact with him/her from the
comfort of their home, what a milestone that could be! With the ability to
download sermon messages at no charge, make online donations, and personally
interact with the preacher by way of the Internet. In the last five years, Zoe Ministries has lost 80 percent of its local
congregation (pew members), but has doubled its revenue through the faithful
partners worldwide who access the ministry through the most powerful means
of technology available, the Internet. Religion and technology must make
sense. Both areas must merge if we are going to reach the world with the
gospel. To those who espouse this philosophy, the 21st century will become
an age where technology is integrated into religion by allowing people to
have their religious experience by way of the Internet. A "soul" used to be
defined as the person we could see, but now we are discovering that a "soul"
is the person whom we cannot see. Bruce Prokopets

About Christian Holidays
by bamby willcock - Friday, 14 March 2008, 09:13 AM
Anyone in the world
By Celia Namart Christian holidays play a very significant part in this worlds daily agenda, even though there are many other people around the world who are not Christians, and vast areas in which Christianity has no followers, the Christian holidays are well known around the world and they are also a key factor in international business at certain times of the year. From its very beginning Christianity set out to mark its historical events by holidays, creating these holidays to commemorate some meaningful event in the history of the religion birth. The most famous of all Christian holidays is naturally Christmas, this joyous occasion presents Christianly to the world in its purest form, a warm family holiday that is celebrated in order to remember that Jesus was born on the date. The celebration of Christmas, from the mess in Bethlehem in Israel to the family dinners around the western world is one of the most important moments for the Christian family, and is planned and waited for most of the year. The spirit of giving and sharing on Christmas day, while appreciating the family closeness and unity represents the true spirit of charismas and the Christian holidays. The common tradition is to set up a Christmas tree decorated with lights and other colorful decorations, many decorate the whole house with lights and sometimes even with some puppets of Santa and his reindeers. Most people like to exchange gifts before Christmas, this is something very special to non Christians as they whiteness a whole community shopping around for gifts, emphasizing the spirit of giving. Another major Christian holiday is Easter, which is celebrate to remind the believers of the resurrection of Jesus, Easter is one of the oldest of the Christian holidays. There is a special importance to this holiday since it is a traditional and especially important to visit the church on that day, even for those who are not regular visitors to the church try and make it on Easter, in the United States some people even buy new clothes for the occasion. Easter has one of the nicest and most colorful traditions of the Christian holidays, the Easter bunny and the colorful Easter eggs that are hidden for kids to discover them, in Europe many place chocolate eggs and because the children like it so much they are sold a few weeks before the actual holiday and a few months after Easter is long past. One very important thing to know is that in many places around the world people are aware of the Christian holidays, the rest of the world watches as the Christian holidays are celebrated in Europe and the west, and many business come to a halt as a result of the holidays, since many people take a long vacation, it is customary to say that no one really works during the holidays and you can only expect to start doing business again after new years is celebrated and recovered from. Christmas is a wonderful holiday, everyone loves this holiday season with its spirit of giving and loving. Faith and Life
by bamby willcock - Wednesday, 12 March 2008, 06:28 PM
Anyone in the world
By Jeff Stats Faith plays an important role in the life of humans. First of all it is necessary to understand the concept of faith and how it is interpreted by different people. According to the dictionary explanation faith is a confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing; it is a belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. It could be loyalty to a person or thing or a commitment to something or someone. However primary meaning of faith came to us from Christianity and is defined as theological virtue and a secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will, it is a set of principles or beliefs associated with religious issues. One has to understand though that faith and religion are different things, although closely interrelated especially in a modern world. The word faith mainly originated in Biblical times and is the ultimate source of understanding of the issue of faith. It is important to understand why it has been an essential part of peoples life for centuries and continues to be that, in order to grasp the meaning of faith and its magnetic power of attracting so many people all over the world. Faith is not merely adopting a set of beliefs that a person finds in religious books, but it is rather a way of life or adherence to that which leads to life. Faith however is not only a mental state of believing the holder of faith has to have relationships with God, truly love him and adapt his/her life to the ways of God. Many questions rise when we speak of faith and its meaning, for instance why should a person believe in eternity and in life after death if one does not prepare for it by repentance, spiritual vigil, and loving God? What good does this fake faith do in such persons life? Also what benefit does believing in virtues bring if one does not live them and truly experience? Thus it becomes clear that there is a huge gap between theoretical faith which does not save the soul, and practical faith, the results of which are evident in one's life. In Matthew 7:16 it is written You will know them by their fruits, this sentence explains the whole notion of having faith. If a person does really have faith in the heart this faith will be producing visible results in persons life, although they may not be as evident to the outside world, the individual will feel the difference. The life of faith is linked with peace, tranquility and lack or absence of fear, for when the believer, thus the holder of faith, begins to fear he will sense the presence of God. For such people, whose hearts are occupied with God there is no place for trouble, they are usually very optimistic and have a greater sense of life then their surroundings. Those people are typically more joyful and people loving, they accept all the things life prepares for them in a more tolerant way. Faith gives them such power and motivation to overcome their difficulties that they can see more beauty in every day routine, which is sometimes very hard for ordinary people. Often life of a person of faith is also related with purity of behavior, because the believer feels the presence of God, who sees, hears and records all that he does. For this very reason the believer feels ashamed and afraid of wrong doing in front of God who is omnipresent. Having faith makes us submit to Gods will and become calmer if something goes not according to our plan. If we have faith we know, that there is a reason for everything and this very reason keeps us from something bad. Accepting life in such a way gives us more satisfaction and pure happiness with what life and God has granted us. Faith is not what is seen by the human eye (2 Cor. 5:7), which is true for the human senses that can only detect a physical object or movement; faith in this instance is almost invisible. I wrote almost because, for a true believer faith is a way of life, thus he knows exactly what faith means to him. The intellectual capabilities may easily lead a human to the beginning of the road on which one finds happiness, but it can never continue on to the end of the way. The mind cannot comprehend God mainly because it has definite limits on the other hand God has no limits. Besides God has numerous qualities and can come in life of a person in different forms, and creatures; people often do not recognize Gods presence if they only concentrate on the power of mind in comprehending all things. Again we turn to the subject of necessity to have faith, so that to accept things without fully understanding the origin of them or the meaning of them. Taking for instance a microwave, which works on the principle rarely recognized by people using it, however this still does let them use it every day. They accept that there is a microwave and it is a convenient device for heating food. The same situation occurs when miracles happen. People do not even get close to comprehending their true nature. But the mind accepts it happening with faith, with its infinite power, greater than that of the mind, which can perform things the mind fails to understand. Most of people agree and believe that this power comes from God, thats the ultimate source of their faith. The most vivid example of faith is brought to us by children. They are more open- minded and happy than adults are. They are able to see the genuine beauty around them and capture the essence of all things, although they might not know how to explain them. Children do not carry negative emotional baggage, unless they have some psychological problems, like most of adults do. This very feature makes kids peace loving and world accepting, they believe that things as they are, are just perfect. This is the precious attribute that many adults lack and thus suffer immensely in their lives. They get too preoccupied with all possible problems in the world and forget to relax for a minute in order to feel life and all the virtues it has to offer. Those who forget God or simply people without faith in their hearts are lost in this life, or in any other life they will obtain. The Bible says People who seek God, find God (Matthew 7:7-8). I believe that this search can only be successful if a person honestly has faith not originated from mental activities but from the deepest corner of the heart. The one, who is looking for God, will find Him as God is the ultimate reward in peoples life. It follows that they believe in God being the source of good and protection, otherwise why should conduct such a search? For humans, though, faith in God is still something that has to be connected with the earthly matters. With faith people receive a sense of hope, which is what so pleasing for humans. Having hope for a better future, for a long life and other virtues life has in store for them is a motivator and a reason for faith. It is often viewed as a psychological necessity, a need to feel that you are protected and cared for by someone who is more superior and all mighty. Although such concerns cause people to turn their faces to God, there are other issues that make people live a righteous life with faith in heart. One of the major anxieties of modern humans is the need to find their self identity, to discover their true nature. The Bible says that God has created people on his own image. This is the ultimate truth that should guide people in finding God and establishing strong faith in their souls. Everyone nowadays is experiencing certain unpleasant discomfort, as most of the time they do not know who they are and what they are seeking in life. Belonging to various social groups and finding an interesting profession is not enough for an individual to experience happiness from realizing the true self. Faith in such cases often leads people to positive results as they understand what their heart desires and how to live life, to be satisfied and happy. Those people become like children, who are able to enjoy every ray of light and each drop of rain. Faith thus is of tremendous importance for humans, as it establishes peace in their hearts and allows enjoying life as it is, accepting all of its positive and negative occurrences. Finding peace with the self gives a person a light feeling of life and an acceptance of death. Such people are not afraid of neither of them. They are aware that life is just for a short period of time and they will have to become something else after it ends. Most peoples in the world greatest fear is death, but not for those who know what it is to be with God and to feel its omnipresent light everywhere. Assured of Gods help wherever they are makes them fearless and allows them to see things clearly without the dark shades of fear or shame or lust, feelings that are common for those who are lost. Faith is not simply an important part of our lives, it is crucial for our happiness and well being. We have to feel that we are not put here to suffer but to enjoy life and such sensation comes with faith. Emotional Affair Warning Sign #1 - "But We're Just Friends"
by bamby willcock - Tuesday, 11 March 2008, 06:54 AM
Anyone in the world
By Jeff Herring Emotional affairs are in many ways more difficult to spot than physical affairs. An emotional affair can look just like a friendship to outsiders. An emotional affair is much easier to deny than a physical affair, especially to yourself. "We're just friends" can be deadly words "But we're just friends" can be some of the most deadly words in a relationship. This is because if you have caught yourself thinking or saying, "but we're just friends" you are probably already in trouble. You see the journey to an emotional affair is a very slippery slope. Most people do not start out seeking to complicate their lives and mess up their love relationship by seeking out an emotional affair. I've heard so many people say "well, it just sorta happened." Sorry, you don't get to say that one. You may not have intended to end up in an emotional or even a full blown physical affair. But each step of the way was a decision you made, a choice to go down a certain road. When you catch yourself thinking "we're just friends" or having to defend yourself to others by saying "we're just friends" you have already started the process of rationalizing to yourself behavior and choices that you know are not acceptable. If you are doubting this point, just take the word rationalize and spell it just a little differently: Rational lies. Rational lies you tell others. Rational lies you tell yourself. Ligaments, Vertebral Arteries and the Sub Occiput-Their Role in Structural Integrity
by bamby willcock - Monday, 10 March 2008, 01:03 AM
Anyone in the world
By Michael C. Nelson The structural health of the neck is not just the maintenance of muscles, but the maintenance of; (1) The Ligaments; That support the vertebrae but have a minimal blood supply, unlike muscle tissue. Ligaments are the tissue system that binds bones together supporting joints and regulating their range of movement. Being poor in blood supply, they do not heal easily and are prone to calcium deposits, causing wear and tear arthritic changes to the joints. This can cause friction against the wall of the Vertebral Arteries as they pass through the Cervical Vertebrae wearing the wall thin and or, impeding the flow. Ligaments need deep massage and traction to promote good blood supply, full ranges of movement and the re-absorption of calcium deposits. (2) The Vertebral Arteries travel up through the vertebral foramina of each cervical vertebra. They enter the spine at the level of the 6th cervical vertebra (base of the neck) and travel up to the head where, to get into the cranium the vertebral arteries take, Two 90degree turns to supply about two thirds of the blood supply to the brain - which needs a minute to minute supply of glucose and oxygen to maintain its normal function. The vertebral arteries supply the deeper, autonomic centers of the brain, if the blood supply is diminished to these areas we have all types of dysfunctional conditions arising particularly as we age! If you can help to maintain the structural integrity of your cervical spine (neck) and therefore the blood supply to your brain the better you are going to be getting older as gravity grinds us ALL into the ground the inexorable factor. People forget that GRAVITY is the main reason we need 8 hours sleep a day and that our Rigging is our best way to pass this force through us, with as little wear and tear as possible. (3) The area known as the Sub Occiput is the level of the neck where the spine articulates with the base of the head, or cranium. Traction and deep inhibition to this area can affect our function through the many important physiological centers that are situated at the top of the neck. The Carotid sinus, at the top of the Carotid arteries carries the other third of the blood supply to the brain. This collection of nerves controls feedback information from the hearts pumping, for regulation of blood pressure. The 10th cranial nerve The Vagus Nerve leaves the cranium in this region and is one half of the control on the hearts rate of beating. The vagal nerve supplies rhythmic nerve impulses/control to the motor functions of most of the gastro-intestinal system, our peristalsis or gut motion. The amount of muscle investment in the Sub Occiput is great it needs to turn the head very quickly with control, it needs to hold the heaviest part of our body on the top of two small condyles and not impair that blood supply or pinch those nerve. These muscles are intimately connected to the muscles of mastication and all the emotional elements that the mouth and jaw can bring up that makes us grind our teeth at night or clench so tight we wake with a pounding headache. The Sub Occiput can be tight when we go to bed, impairing our sleep and even tighter the next morning, the impairment of blood supply can be debilitating, the whole cycle repeating more and more intensely each day. There are so many control mechanisms in the Sub Occipital Region and the rest of the neck and spine, that normal structural integrity is very, very important to the normality of most of our Function. Most professional Physical Therapists, which are Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Naturopaths and Masseurs have this knowledge, spend a little time to get to know a good one and you will have a much stronger armory to approach Diss-ease and generally live a better quality of life. It's All About Balance - This Student Knows It!
by bamby willcock - Saturday, 8 March 2008, 06:19 AM
Anyone in the world
By Maria Pascucci For this week's "It's All About Balance" student spotlight, Campus Calm had the opportunity to chat with Margaret Zupa, an 18-year-old senior who attends Nardin Academy in Buffalo, New York. At first glance, it would seem that Margaret is your textbook high achiever: straight A's, a slew of extra curricular activities and a part-time writing gig on the side. Margaret is captain of her school's crew team, co-president of the service club, a member of the National Honor Society and a Buffalo News NeXt (teen) correspondent. But despite juggling a ton of responsibilities, Margaret understands that she needs to maintain a healthy amount of balance to lead a truly happy and successful life. Unfortunately, many students never come to this realization until much later in life, if ever. If you're looking for tips on how to balance school with fun and to find positive ways to develop a strong sense of self in the process, this is a teen you'll most certainly want to meet! Campus Calm: Given your full schedule, how do you make time for fun on a regular basis? Do you believe that your ability to balance fun and work today will help to make you more happy and successful tomorrow? Why or why not? Margaret: I make time for fun by getting assignments and other things done early, when I have time to do them, instead of waiting until the last weekend before they are due and panicking about it. If I get things done a while before the deadline, then I have time to relax while everyone else is cramming. I definitely believe that this balance will help me in the future, because I can certainly look back on high school and have great memories of all the fun I had, but also have strong grades to show that I was working hard at the same time. Campus Calm: What do you do to unwind after a stressful day at school? Margaret: After a stressful day at school, I always go to crew practice. Without fail, working out and being with my fantastic teammates and coaches is the best thing to make me realize how trivial all of the little things that worry me are, and how incredibly lucky I am in the first place. Campus Calm: What do you and your friends do for fun? Margaret: My friends and I go out to eat, go see a movie, go to [Buffalo] Sabres games, get coffee, or just hang around with each other for fun. Whatever we do, we end up laughing and enjoying each other so much it rarely matters where we are. Campus Calm: What pastimes bring you a sense of calm? Margaret: Rowing is absolutely the one thing in the world that gives me a sense of absolute peace. Especially early in the morning, when my teammates are the first people I see and a boat is the first thing I touch, and the sun hasn't even brightened the water yet -- being on the water is the most calming thing I have ever experienced. Moving through the glassy water with one motion with seven of my best friends as the sun turns the sky pink and purple is the most gratifying and serene thing in the world. Campus Calm: What are you most proud of in life? Margaret: I am most proud of my friends and family. From my teammates, all of whom are incredible people who do everything I do and more, to other friends who have come through extremely difficult things in their lives with a positive attitude, to my family who provide the best example for me I could ever ask for; the people who surround me are what makes me who I am and what I am most proud of. Campus Calm: What are you grateful for? Margaret: I am also most grateful for my friends and family, for without their constant positive influence, unconditional love, and unending support I could never in a million years do what I have done in the past 18. Campus Calm: What do you think makes for a beautiful person? Do you think you're beautiful? Why or why not? Margaret: I think a beautiful person is someone who sees the beauty in others before the ugliness. I certainly try to be such a person, because life is always better when you see the good before the bad and appreciate all of the talents and positive traits of other people before noticing their shortcomings. Campus Calm: Please finish this sentence: I believe an education enables me to do ________. Margaret: I believe an education enables me to-effect positive change in the world. Campus Calm: Please finish this sentence: I believe grades measure ________. However, no letter grade could possibly measure ________. Margaret: I believe grades measure-book knowledge. However, no letter grade could possibly measure-character and resilience, which I believe are key to success in any career and in life. Campus Calm: What is your personal definition of a happy and successful life? Margaret: For me, a happy and successful life is one that is rewarding to the person living it. It they wake up every day thinking that today is going to be a great day, because they are going to help someone or truly enjoy what they are doing, then they are happy and successful. People who hate their jobs, no matter how much money they make or what kind or car they drive, cannot live a happy life if they do not feel that their life is rewarding and gratifying, whether it be because of their great family, their job, or their hobbies. People have to find some sense of purpose and goal in life, the thing that makes it worth getting up every day and the thing that allows them to sleep at night feeling fulfilled. No matter what this thing is, I believe that feeling like one is contributing and making a difference, no matter how large or small, is the key to a happy and successful life. Thai Kickboxing Lessons Really Kicked My Butt

Anyone in the world
By Yoshi Kundagawa I'm totally serious about getting in shape. With at least 30 pounds to lose, I'm one of the fatter tubs of lard at the gym, but this week I'm not the most out of shape. Two guys have come to today's muay thai kickboxing lesson that easily are 50 pounds overweight. One is tall, and one is short. But they are both shaped like Anjou pears. They are sweaty and wheezing before the class even starts. We warm up with skipping rope. I am horrible at skipping rope. It's only been 3 weeks that I have been taking thai kickboxing lessons, and my technique would have a 3rd grade schoolkid howling. The jump rope is plastic covered and it hurts my toes when I wack them every fourth or fifth skip. I see some of the more experienced kickboxers can skip on one foot or even alternate feet. Something to look forward to I guess. To my surprise the little fat guy can skip better than I can. His taller counterpart is already dripping with perspiration, his Judas Priest t-shirt is drenched. When we stop skipping and move onto burpees, jumping squats and hillclimbers, he calls it a day. Today we are learning elbow strikes. This is a very dangerous drill, even at slow mow. If you clip a guy in the eyebrow with your elbow, he's looking at five to ten stitches, easily. The Kru, or teacher, shows us a lethal technique he calls "Breaking The Elephants Tusk". Imagine a guy punching at your face, you ducking to one side, then ramming the tip of your elbow down full speed into his bicep. Crazy stuff man...if I had known this as a kid my buddies in high school would never have picked on me. Of course they'd be in hospital and I would have been in Juvenile Lockup. The 60 minute session ends with abdominal work...oh my god the pain! The entire front sheet of muscle and flab on my body is on fire. Another great muay thai kickboxing lesson has come to an end. I feel exhausted but amazing. What's really amazing is how well I sleep at night and how well I go to the bathroom. I'll leave that story for another day!
