Anyone in the world By Richard Chapo If you are in Russia during the winter months, you had better be ready for the cold. Even if it is freezing outside, it doesnt mean you cant get out and go after a few fish. Ice Fishing in Russia Living in Russia for a year was an amazing time. It was also a time of discovery on a scale you cant imagine. As with many cultures, there were vastly different aspects and slight different ones that made it all well worth the time. I enjoy getting out to the lake for a bit of fishing and so do the Russians. This is true even if it is winter. If it is winter in Russia, we have to be talking about ice fishing. If the Russian winter stopped Hitler in his tracks, you know it is going to be an interesting time out on the lake. Fortunately, the Russians have developed a way of staying warm while sitting on the ice after years and years of study and development. What is the magic? You guessed it Vodka! There is saying in Russia when it comes to drinking vodka warm on the inside and cold on the outside. Vodka is offered up as more or less radiator fluid for your body. I have to admit it works very, very well. Once you head out to the lake, it is a pretty simple process. Find an area that looks less thick and break out a long, stiff saw. You then start trying to saw, pound and hack a hole in the ice. Yelling helps and is generally encouraged. Vodka is as well. Once the hole is opened, it is time to find some small stools, bait your line and have a seat. Down goes the line and up goes the vodka. Frankly, the fish are pretty safe. When ice fishing in Russia, the prospect of catching something depends on a number of factors. First and foremost, the type of fish is entirely dependant on the lake you are on. The second issue, however, is more important. How long can you stand to sit there? It is cold like you cant imagine. At 30 degrees below zero, even vodka is not going to keep you warm for long. You can dress with so many layers that you look like the Michelin Man and it still is not going to be a long session. Do I recommend going ice fishing in Russia? Sure. Once and only once! Then you can say you did it while you are hunting for some aspirin. Rick Chapo is with Nomad Journals - makers of a fishing log book to record your fishing exploits. Anyone in the world By Debbie Fontana It's become a mantra. Fat is bad. At least, that's what almost all the diet gurus say. But did you know that when we cut too much fat from our diets, we may be eliminating the very element we need to absorb the vitamins and nutrients that keep us healthy. That's because certain vitamins, especially in fruits and vegetables, are "fat-soluble." In other words, your body can't absorb nutrients unless enough fat is present. So if you're constantly eliminating the fat from your diet to cut calories or to follow the latest warnings, you may be getting far less healthful effects from your salads, other vegetables and fruits. In studies released in 2004 and again this year by Ohio State University, researchers found that the absorption of carotenoids from yellow, orange, and red vegetables is better when you eat them with some fat. Carotenoids are believed to have cancer-fighting properties. Here is a partial list of some fat-soluble compounds that may be absorbed better if you eat them with fat: 1. Beta Carotene. This can be found in foods such as cantaloupe and carrots. The researchers suggest eating salads with full-fat rather than low-fat or no-fat dressings. So if you put carrots in your salad, full-fat dressing may help you to absorb the nutrients. But with so many people unable to stay on strict low-fat or veggie diets, why not choose something that tastes a little better? For example, something that people in Pittsburgh once called a Boston cooler. You cut a cantaloupe in half (leave the rind on), clean the seeds out of the middle, and put a scoop of chocolate or vanilla ice cream in the hollow of the half-melon. Then place the half-melon in a bowl so it doesn't fall over when you try to eat it. You eat the ice cream and the melon with a spoon. It's about 250 calories, but it's a great snack or dessert. You get to indulge with ice cream, but still get some good nutrients from the cantaloupe. It's also filling. So you shouldn't be as hungry as when you just nibble on a salad. And the best part is that the fat in the ice cream may enhance your body's ability to absorb the fat-soluble compounds from the cantaloupe. (Although no one knows for sure at the moment.) 2. Lycopene. This is the red carotenoid found in watermelon, tomatoes and pink grapefruit. It's also a potential cancer fighter. Researchers have shown that our bodies absorb the lycopene in tomatoes more efficiently as sauce, juice or ketchup. Here again, rather than always eating salads with full-fat dressing, why not try cheese ravioli with tomato sauce? It's a tasty, satisfying dinner. And you may be enhancing your absorption of the lycopene in the tomato sauce with the cheese in the ravioli. 3. Vitamin E. This can be found in broccoli, mangoes, peanuts and spinach. Some research suggests that vitamin E can help your heart and possibly prevent blood clots. But the results aren't conclusive yet. However, a recent German study with rats showed that eating trans fats actually slowed the absorption of vitamin E when compared to other types of fats. So this may get tricky. 4. Lutein. This antioxidant can be found in dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach and also in egg yolks. Lutein is supposed to help your skin and your eyes, particularly in reducing the risk of macular degeneration. I find it interesting that we're allowed to eat eggs again when the food police vilified eggs for so many years - particularly egg yolks. Have we also gone too far in vilifying fat? So before you completely cut the fat from your diet, think about the nutrients you may be missing. Now I'm not saying we should eat only high-fat foods. But while it's not healthy to go to extremes with high fat, it seems as though it's not healthy to go to extremes with low fat, either. Maybe it isn't only the fat that's making us fat, but also the number of calories we consume. Some moderation in both areas just might do the trick. And I believe people are more likely to lose weight if they like the foods they eat. So talk to your doctor about whether you really need to cut so much fat from your diet. Or is it healthy to have a little ice cream or ravioli once in a while? His answer might surprise you. Anyone in the world By Donald Sudy Don't Worry, That Clammy, Embarrassing Condition Can Be Treated With autumns cool breezes, those of us who suffer through the summer with clammy, sweaty skin can breathe a sigh of relief, right? Usually. But if you find yourself still more than dewy when everyone else has broken out the corduroy, you may be experiencing more than a little hot flash. Hyperhidrosis excessive sweating is a serious medical condition that afflicts an estimated three percent of us around the world nearly 200 million sweaty souls. Sweating is normal, and necessary, to regulate our body temperatures when we get overheated. But when we sweat more than we need to stay cool, we experience hyperhidrosis. And although any site on the body can be affected, the most common places are the palms, soles of the feet, and underarms. Yet because of lack of awareness, more than half of us are never diagnosed or treated. Thats a shame the condition is eminently treatable, with everything from antiperspirants and electrically stimulated baths to Botox injections. What causes excessive sweating? There are two scenarios, and both usually (but not always) start in childhood or adolescence. One form is caused by a medical condition - such as cancer, diabetes or menopause - or as a side effect of a medication. If you have this form, you even sweat while youre sleeping. The other type is sweating not caused by other medical conditions, or a side effect of medication, and usually occurs in specific sites such as on the palms, soles of the feet, underarms, head or face. Good news no sweaty nights for you. Excessive sweating can cause tremendous emotional stress and anxiety, disrupting your entire life, from relationships and self-image to career choices and recreational activities. Chances are that you worry and suffer every day, spending hours dealing with the sweat - changing clothes, freshening up, stashing napkins or pads under your arms, bathing, and hiding under dark-colored, bulky clothes. To add to the psychological trauma, excessive sweating also can cause painful or irritating skin problems, such as bacteria or fungal overgrowth, infections and even disintegration of the skin. You neednt sweat in silence, however currently you have five treatment options. The first defense is topical antiperspirants and astringent salves that dry up the sweat glands. But they offer limited relief, and sweating returns if you stop using them. Another treatment is iontophoresis and is commonly used to treat excessively sweaty feet. This involves putting your feet in a bath and then passing a gentle electrical current through the water. While iontophoresis works for some people, though its not clear why, treatment can be somewhat painful and take many sessions. Medications such as prescription-strength antiperspirants and oral drugs such as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs (for stress-induced sweating) also are used, but with only modest success. And, side effects such as swelling or blurred vision often limit their long-term usefulness. An exciting, newer treatment is Botox, the same medication used to soften facial wrinkles. Botox injections work by blocking the nerve impulse to the sweat gland, reducing the glands over-activity. A series of injections in the affected area can last up to nine months. In rare cases that dont respond to the more conventional treatments, surgery to remove the offending sweat gland or interrupt the errant nerve signal may be an option. However, since its riskier and can cause permanent side effects and damage such as increased sweating in other areas or when eating, and reduced shoulder motion, patients should discuss all of the ramifications with their doctors before choosing this option. So, dont sweat it literally. With proper treatment, you can leave behind the tissues and extra clothes, and do the wave worry-free. Anyone in the world By Jenifer Shapiro Holistic education is a hot topic these days. From holistic schools to holistic certification programs, there are seemingly endless opportunities for obtaining holistic training. But which one is right for you and how do you choose? When I work with a client looking for holistic education, we usually focus on 3 things: 1) What do they want to learn? This means more than simply 'acupuncture' or 'homeopathy'. It means understanding the type of information you want to obtain and how you will use it. For example, if you are an MD interested in learning more about herbs to see if you want to use them in your practice, you may want to start with a weekend herbal program to learn the basics. On the other hand, if you know you want to work with individuals prescribing herbs, you'd probably want to look at a natropathic or herbal certification program. 2) Next we look at how they will fit school into their schedule. For example, do they want to attend night classes, day classes, weekend classes? Do they want more self-study? It is important to review this before looking at schools to save time in the school selecting process. 3) Next we look at the format or formats that the student might prefer. Do they want to learn in-person, are they more comfortable with teleclasses(and will they learn what they need in a teleclass as some holistic courses include hands on work), would they like a more experiential program or are they more of a book learner and also do they want to work with a college type atmosphere or more of a small group format. Once you've determined the above, you are ready to begin exploring schools and their options. Take your time, ask the important questions and take a program that you will enjoy, not simply one that is the easiest or least expensive. Enjoying your education is an important part of the journey. Anyone in the world By Eliza Maledevic There are a lot of people who are suffering from depression. Actually, many of these people do not even seek for treatments or remedies for their depression or simply they do not know that depression can be treated. Most of the people who are suffering from depression, feel sad or empty, they experience the feelings of helplessness and guilt, they even lose interest on a lot of things even the things they enjoyed the most. They also suffer from insomnia, and at some point they have thoughts of committing suicide. There are a lot of possible reasons or causes for depression, but these actually vary from different persons. At some point it may run in families, actually, some researchers believe that this condition can be inherited. This condition can also be cause by psychological or physical changes in ones life, like a person who experienced trauma or any suffering from severe illness can develop or lead to depression. Depression is common to women than men. Having such condition should be accompanied by physical evaluation which is actually conducted by doctors. Certainly, there are some illnesses or even medications that can lead to depression. So the doctor should work out things in order to develop the best treatment for you. Depression can be treated by therapy, but there are some people who decide to try out prescribed medication. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclics, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), are the most common prescribed medications. It is hard to find the right medications for each person who is suffering with such condition, so it really takes time to find the right combination of medications. But, all the prescribed medications have the minor or even major side effects to people. So if a prescribed medication doesnt work for you, or you are sad about the side effects and the risks that go with them, then you can try out herbal remedies for depression. Actually, there are a lot of herbal remedies out in the market that can help you treat your depression. One of the herbal remedies that you can use to help you with your condition is relagen. Relagen is actually a 100% all natural product that effectively helps you with your stress, anxiety and depression. This herbal remedy is actually designed to treat people with depression safely and naturally and without the worry of having side effects that you can find with prescribed medications. And there is actually a bonus with using Relagen, since this herbal remedy can also help you loose that unwanted fats or excess weight around your waist which caused by high levels of the cortisol stress hormone. The relagen ingredients have been expansively and extensively researched with about 45 studies in order to make sure that this herbal remedy can be effective, safe and with no harmful side effects. Large amount of areas of research include cancer adjuvant therapy, reducing stress and anxiety, promoting relaxation, improving learning and concentration, and a lot more. Relagen is proven to work significantly by reducing physical, mental and social symptoms of PMS such as depression, insomnia, muscle stiffness, cramps, anxiety, irritability, and so on. If you are suffering with depression, you can seek for professional help, you can ask your doctor for the right treatment options for your condition, it may be prescribed medications or herbal remedies for depression, but also remember to explore a lot of different options before making any decision. Anyone in the world By Steve Hill There is a strong possibility that whoever reads this article is looking into ways of losing weight. In this article I describe how I went about losing my excess weight. I hope you enjoy the read. I have had many problems with my weight throughout my life. Being overweight had a major negative effect on my confidence and made me feel down and at times depressed. When feeling low, I would comfort eat which merely added to the problem. A few years ago I decided I had had enough of being fat and that it was time to do something about it. I was now more determined than ever to lose some of my excess weight. I had read about many different types of diet; most of which I felt were not suitable for me and others which sounded disgusting. What I required was my own type of weight loss program. I have never liked the thought of attending a gym, they seem to be full of thin people, however I knew that exercise would need to be a factor. Instead, I started to walk a lot more instead of driving everywhere, I also started to play football and tennis again. The thought of going out jogging did not really appeal to me, however I did buy an exercise bike which I kept in my bedroom. As well as exercise, I also realised that I had to change my eating habits. I am somebody who likes to eat all the wrong types of food. I love all types of take away including pizzas, a curry, a chinese, and chips. I would always be snacking in between meals, on things like peanuts and crisps. I also was rather partial to alcohol, this is something which helped me to gain confidence. The thought of cutting all of these things out of my life seemed to harsh, so I decided that I would start to write down everything I ate. This way I could see exactly what I could cut out. This is what I decided to eat on average per day. I would eat a healthy breakfast such as toast or cerial. I would try not to eat any snacks in between any meals, this was the thing that would be most difficult to stick to. I did however come up with a plan which you will probably think is daft. Whenever I felt hungry or a desire for food; I would eat a polo mint or if I was at home, would clean my teeth. Sounds crazy but it worked for me! For lunch I would also stick to something healthy like pasta, however for my evening meal, I decided that I could eat anything that I wanted, including curry. On the weekend I would always treat myself to a takeaway and would allow myself some alcohol. This type of diet needs a lot of discipline and character, however it hs helped me to become a lot more confident and happy with life. Good luck. Anyone in the world By Georg Michael Richter We cannot escape from the advancing globalization.
Why to globalize or seen more regionally internationalize ? Due to the permanently increasing competition a big number of producers from all over the world enters our market places. This narrows naturally the local market for local producers because the clients very often only need less complicated machinery for their products/solutions and thus imported products are completely sufficient. On the other hand local manufacturers very often offer technical products on a high standard which in-turn would be needed in other countries of the world due to their specific production methods/goals. Looking towards the huge industrialized European markets from Italy to UK, from Poland to Germany - there exist enormous potentials for foreign suppliers. In addition the manufacturers get direct information from the markets, the clients needs as well as market trends which enables them to develop new solutions or to adapt their products besides of the fact that they become more independent from the local/regional economic cycles. The European markets have their own specific mentalities. Anyone in the world By Julie Williams Chooks (chickens) have been domesticated for many centuries. They originate from the Malaysian rainforests so they love to free-range. Chooks are such easy animals to care for, can make great pets for children and are a valuable resource for the organic gardener.
Youll need to check with your local council to find out their regulations. Some councils wont allow you to keep any poultry, whereas others willsome even allow roosters. Some of the benefits of keeping chooks:
- they supply you with beautiful, fresh eggs - daily
- your left overs will never go in the bin again (reduces waste)
- provide you with an excellent fertilizer base
- they dig over the soil (so you don't have to)
- they reduce insect numbers; great for around your orchard
- provide you with live entertainment Basic requirements
* Dry, fox proof shelter
* A safe place to lay eggs and hatch chicks (if you have a rooster)
* A roosting perch off the ground (allow about 20cm per bird)
* Layer pellets (or crumble for chicks) should make up the majority of their diet.
* Kitchen scraps are great for variety
* Wheat, corn or other grains should be offered occasionally, but not form the majority of their diet
* Birds have no teeth; they swallow small pebbles or grit to grind down their food in their gizzard. They must have access to a supply of grit for this purpose.
* Never feed chocolate, coffee, avocado or rhubarb, as they are toxic to chooks
* They must always have access to clean, fresh water. If you dont plan on letting your chooks free range in a garden area during the day, they will be much happier if you provide them with an outside run where they will be able to scratch at the ground and enjoy the sunlight.
I lock my chooks up from sunset to about midday. This way theyve almost always laid their eggs by then, so that I dont have to go on a daily egg hunt! Old grass-catchers from lawn movers make great laying boxes just the right size and they offer ventilation. Liquid Fertilizer
Chook manure is a great base for a liquid fertilizer or to add to your compost heap. You never use it fresh though, as bird manure also contains their urine and will burn your crops.
To make a liquid manure, place it in a porous bag in a bucket and fill the bucket with water. After about three weeks or so you can use the water on and around your plants, diluted to look like weak tea. Chook Manure for Compost
If you provide a litter of straw, hay or sawdust in your chooks living quarters they will turn it into great compost material for you. They will scratch it, add manure and turn it over. You can add layers of this organic matter to your compost heap or leave it to turn into a fine, dark substance. Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. It is my mission to encourage as many people as possible to start organic gardening. This will improve both our individual lives and the wellbeing of our personal and global environments. Please visit my website for more great organic gardening tips & information. Anyone in the world By Aasheesh Jain It is reported that more than 70 million men and women in the United States alone, have the disease of premature thinning or hair loss. It is also imperative that before deciding about the application of any hair loss cure agent, it is necessary to know the cause of your hair loss. The causes of hair loss are many and vary from individual to individual. Where as, many of the causes for loss of hair have been identified, we have yet to see a product which can be termed as a recipe for growing hair. Can this hair loss phenomenon be reversed? Do you accept baldness as the reality of the problem to be faced at some stage of the life? Since the reasons for hair loss leading to the state of baldness are many and vary from individual to individual, the remedies should also follow the same suit. They need to vary from individual to individual. And generally, it is at this point you or your physician makes the mistake in medication. In a case reported, a pharmacist gave the solution with minoxidil for treating baldness. The patient used it for 4 months, no growth of hair, but he did develop a kidney infection as a side effect. The damage of oxidation and free radicals on the growth of hair is now fairly well known. The scalp and skin are also damaged by it. No product with the base of hard chemicals can give you a permanent hair loss cure formula. You have to revert to the nature and seek the Mother Natures support. There are many medicinal plants which prevent the hair loss and contribute to the sustained growth of new hair. These act as vasodilators. They stimulate the capillaries in the scalp to increase blood supply and nutrient level in the hair root. In such cases the chances of side-effect are nil and if anything, minimal! Any artificial color or chemical preservative is bound to cause harm, instead of providing cure. Many over the counter products are named natural. Do not be taken in by their style of propaganda. Some companies promise full refund, if the products do not deliver the goods! Sometimes the process of gettting the refund is so laborious that some part of the hair loss could be attributed to it. The final solution is to revert to the nature. You need to understand this point very carefully. I recently saw an advertisement on TV, where in a new product, a soap was introduced. Now it has lemon, the model was screaming at the top of her voice, for lustrous growth of your hair! My point is, why buy their soap for the lemon-benefit? Why not put the juice of a lemon in the bucket of water in which you going to take bath! It is so cheap! Purity guaranteed! Anyone in the world By Kelvyn Peters I am approaching 70 years of age very quickly and I have been dieting since I was thirteen years old. To look at me now you would not think that I have been a professional boxer or a marathon runner. My younger brother and I were often mistaken for twins when we were ten years old. He grew up to be tall and lanky at 6 feet. I grew partly up to be short and chunky at 5 feet 5 inches. Now younger brother is very thin and I am not. It has been said that my brother looks as though there was a famine in the land ... and I look as if I caused the famine. I was not obese when I was thirteen years old but I was an accomplished boxer. I trained hard 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. I was fit and thin but...I was a growing boy and was always trying to "make weight" for a lower division. Not my choice but the decision of my elders who in those days did not know the damage they were doing. I had won the schoolboys championship and the intermediate championship and could not get opponents in my weight division or age group. The opponents I did get were adults. I was a young boy of thirteen and I was fighting men whose wives and children were in the audience. I felt great about this but it was not doing me any good. At that time you had to be 18 years old to fight professionally. So at thirteen we lied about my age and I turned professional. Within two years I became rated as the third in Australia in the flyweight division (under 98 lbs.) When the Australian Champion retired there was to be a fight-off between the top three contenders. I was supposed to be a certainty. However, I was still a growing boy and I was going to have difficulty making the weight. I weighed 4 lbs. over the limit with a week until the weigh-in. It did not matter if I won or not if I weighed more than 98 lbs I was out of the championship. I was then given to help me to lose weight the most dangerous instructions that could be given to a fifteen old boy. I was to "dry out". In effect, I was to cease drinking fluids for the whole week. No water, no tea, no softdrink. I was to chew gum which would produce saliva which I was to spit out continuously. (Yuck!). And I had a turkish bath each night. Fluids were my enemy and when I got really thirsty I was allowed to suck the juice from an orange with a hole punctured in it...and boy was I thirsty! While this was going on I trained hard and ate little. The weigh-in was 2 hours before the fight and I stripped naked to be weighed. I could not risk leaving my underpants on! Although the official was sympathetic no matter how he jiggled the beam he could get less than 98.5 lbs! I was given an hour to lose 8 ounces. In normal time that would have been easy! But I had nothing to give. My bladder was empty; my bowels were empty; my body was mostly muscle and bone. I was given an old army coat and told to run round the block ten times in an attempt to raise a sweat and then immediately put under a hot shower to keep it going..as if. Then one of the older trainers (even people I did not know seemed to help me) spent the time remaining trying to massage some of the fat of me. The only place I seemed to have any fat was on my backside. It seems funny now but I can still remember the embarrassment of lying in the nuddie with all sorts of people watching Johnnie Shields slap my backside for twenty minutes. Did I make the weight? I sure did! 97 lbs. 14 ounces. I'd give anything to say that it was all worthwhile and I won the fight and went on to become Australian Flyweight Champion. I did not! Up until then I had never been knocked down in all my fights. A reputation I had been proud of. In Australia in those days the referee never stopped a fight just because a boxer was hurt. The only way to stop a fight before the time limit was for the corner to throw in the towel. My trainer threw in the towel towards the end of the eighth round. I had not been knocked out but I had been knocked down eight times, five of them in the eighth round, and I kept on getting up. And here comes the tragedy. Although I felt like a mongrel dog who had let everybody down, my trainer was supportive. I was a good boxer there would be other opportunities he told me. I'd done my best and worked hard for a long time. "Take a week's holiday", he said," don't come near the gym for a week. Have a milkshake or two. Relax and enjoy yourself". And I did! When I arrived at the gym a week later everyone mentioned how well I looked and I felt good too. I jumped on the scales and to my horror I weighed 115 lbs. a gain of 17 lbs. Everybody I tell this too says it cannot be true. But it is true. Despite my loss I was still rated in the bantam weight division but I would have to lose 10 lbs to make the weight. Even to make the feather weight division I would have to lose 2lbs. I soldiered on for a time but my heart wasn't in it and other interests took the place of boxing. But I am certain that the early insane attempt at weightloss set me up for a life time of diet tragedies. Ask me sometime. About the author Kelvyn Peters is known for his small business consulting.
