Dating Sites & Personal Ads - Who's Looking at You?
by bamby willcock - Saturday, 29 December 2007, 12:58 AM
Anyone in the world
By Harold King Who's Looking at you? If youve ever used an online dating site you wont always know the answer to that. Have you ever been suspicious of the faceless profile constantly viewing your personal ad? Have you refused to display your own photos for that very reason? Have you been ignored or rejected by most of the people you contact? And, even if you have a photo, do you receive messages from faceless people and choose to ignore them, possibly missing out on your dream date but afraid to take that chance? Well, Ive been there! Do you want to know what I did? More of that later, but wouldnt it be great if EVERY personal ad displayed a photograph of its creator? So why dont we? Why cant I put a face to everyone whos been looking at my profile? Why cant I find a site which makes me display a photo of my own face? OK, if I was forced to upload a photograph I could upload one of someone else, but what good will that do me if I ever hope to meet someone? Its generally accepted that many people dont wish to upload their photo at all; often due to the fear of who might see it. There are many other reasons, too, and I understand -- because, for a while, I was one of them. A faceless profile, that is; not a reason! Teachers, for example, may not wish to have students viewing their details and therefore choose to omit photographs from their personal ads. However, this severely limits their potential for meeting other singles with whom they would like to communicate. The vast majority of online dating site members I have spoken to have said they prefer to see a picture of the person with whom they wish to communicate. Or they simply dont communicate. (Yes, I was rejected and ignored by many!) Most dating sites Ive visited have told me personal ads with photos attract 5 to 10 times more people than those without. So why dont we all add a photograph to our ad? Does physical attraction really count? It would appear so. After all, if I want someone to kiss me, physical attraction does count. I know this: Ive been told! Who wants to kiss a face resembling that of a bulldog sucking a wasp? I was once asked. Is their a point to opening communications with me, spending days or weeks dealing with messages before deciding to meet, only to find you cant bring yourself to kiss a face like that? In my experience it would appear not. But I suspect theres a little more to it than the issue of physical attraction. Just for the record, let me indulge in a spot of vanity and say Im not considered to be unattractive. So, for the moment, lets assume our reluctance to communicate with a faceless profile has nothing to do with physical attraction at all, but rather that a photo may be the only way we can gain some sort of safety factor or comfort zone in revealing ourselves to others on the net. For instance, how do we know were communicating with someone who may not only be hiding their good looks but who may also be hiding the real person behind the profile? A photo may not be proof of identity, but in the world of internet dating it appears to be the best we have. It would appear to provide a greater comfort zone. But remember, I may be the teacher who doesnt want my details made available to my students, or a doctor not wishing to be seen by my patients. No matter what my reason for choosing to not reveal my face, the point is this: How do I get the best of both worlds? How do I remain hidden but still attract the people I would like to meet? Every dating site Ive used has left me facing problems such as this and those to which I referred in the second paragraph, so, I decided to do something about it. I went in search of my ideal site. I went in search of a site which offers an environment that caters for people who recognise those same problems. I wanted a site where I could say Every member must include a clear photograph of their own face or be rejected. If I dont want my details made visible to everyone, I can choose to restrict access to my profile by age-range, sexuality, or even make myself invisible to everyone while I use the site anonymously, choosing only to e seen by the people I contact. Non-members cant gain access to my personal ad, so, if anyone can see me I know theyre there for the same reason as myself -- and they will have a face I can see. But if they are young enough to be my neighbours offspring or old enough to be their grandparents I can filter them out. And if they happen to have a sexual preference different than my own I can filter that too. I can even block undesirables and prevent them contacting me at all. As an added bonus my details would not be available to new members until their own profiles had first been approved. Could I find a site like that? NO. Nowhere. So, I did something else: I uploaded a photograph. But thats not all. Ill come to that before I finish, but I can now tell you from experience that if you want to get the most out of your online dating experience it makes sense to upload a photograph and watch those messages pour in to your mailbox at a greater rate than before. Admittedly a photograph doesnt tell the whole story, but making the most of your personal ad is a future article all of its own. Uploading my photograph definitely improved my response rate, but I promised you I would tell you what else I did I found a way to deal with those problems I mentioned earlier. I can now display my photo without being suspicious of a faceless profile constantly viewing my details. I no longer receive messages from faceless people, so, hopefully I wont miss out on that dream date because I was afraid to reply to an unknown entity. And if I send out a message I now find I usually get a response. You lied, I hear you say, you did find your ideal site. Actually, no, I didnt. I created it instead -- just for people like you and I. Well, it seemed the obvious thing to do. But thats not why Im telling you all of this. You may not want to create your own website to cater for your ideals, but, if you want to make the most of your online dating experience, no matter which site you use, put a photograph in your personal ad and let others know whos been viewing them. Your response rate will probably double. Mine did -- and more! You might find others follow your lead. And when they do, then, at least, youll know whos been looking at you. Atkins Diet Basics
by bamby willcock - Thursday, 27 December 2007, 03:39 AM
Anyone in the world
By Lisa Sequera The Atkins diet is not a new phenomenon. The diet first appeared in the late 1970s and has grown popularity in recent years in response to the low-fat diet craze. As dieters had trouble with low-fat plans, they searched for a new solution and Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book found a new audience. A lot of people have jumped on the Atkins bandwagon and there has been a lot of hype as a result. But what are the basic principles of the Atkins diet? The Atkins diet is based on a theory of why we get fat. According to Dr. Atkins, the over-consumption of carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain. The way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat have more to do with your waistline than the amount of fat or calories that you consume. In his book, Atkins outlines a phenomenon called insulin resistance. He theorizes that many overweight people have cells that do not work correctly. When you eat excess carbohydrates and sugar, your body notices that sugar levels are elevated. Insulin is released from the pancreas in order to store sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only store so much glycogen at once. As soon as your body reaches its limit for glycogen storage, the excess carbohydrates are stored as fat. This happens to everyone who eats too many carbohydrates. However, insulin resistant individuals have an even harder time of using and storing excess carbohydrates. The more insulin that your body is exposed to, the more resistant it becomes. Overtime, the pancreas releases more insulin and cells become insulin resistant. The cells are trying to protect themselves from the toxic effects of high insulin. They create less glycogen and more fat. As a result, insulin resistant individuals gain extra weight. The carbohydrates get converted into fat instead of energy. Other side effects include fatigue, brain fog (the inability to focus, poor memory, loss of creativity), low blood sugar (which can leads to hypoglycemia), intestinal bloating, sleepiness, depression and increased blood sugar. There is much more than weight at stake when you are insulin resistant. The remedy for people who are insulin resistant is a diet restricted in carbohydrates. The crux of the Atkins diet is a limitation of carbohydrates in all of its forms. The foods restricted on the Atkins plan include simple sugars (like cookies, sodas and sweets) and complex carbohydrates (like bread, rice and grains). Even carbohydrates that are considered healthy, such as oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat bread, are restricted on the program. The diet has you restrict your carbohydrate intake to less than 40 grams a day. This will put your body in a state of ketosis. While in ketosis, your body will burn fat as fuel. According to Dr. Atkins research, the ketosis state will also affect insulin production and it will prevent more fat from being formed. Your body will begin using your stored fat as an efficient form of fuel, and youll lose weight. Another benefit of the Atkins plan is that ketosis will end your cravings for carbohydrates. If youve been living on a carb-heavy diet, you may have found that you simply cannot get enough carbohydrates. With carbohydrate restriction and ketosis comes a reduction in carbohydrate cravings. People who have been on the Atkins diet for some time report that they do not crave carbohydrates as they once did. Although the initial phases of the Atkins diet are rather strict, the program teaches you to restore balance to your diet in the long run. People who use the diet slowly reintroduce minimal amounts of carbohydrate into their eating until they find a comfortable balance between their health and carbohydrate use. The basic principles of the Atkins diet have been adapted to many other low-carb diet plans. However, Atkins popularity still remains strong as one of the most effective low-carbohydrate solutions for those who are insulin resistant. Stimulation

By Kris Player You get her number, set up the date, take her out, and get her to come back to your place for "a few drinks". You are sitting on the couch kissing and fooling around with her, but after a while she says "It's getting kind of late... I've better get going". Being the gentleman that you are, you respect her wishes and show her out, even though you are pissed beyond belief... and stuck with a severe case of blue-balls. The reason why this happens to many men is because of a lack of the proper stimulation. If you want to turn "It's getting kind of late... blah blah blah" into "One more time before I leave for work" you must stimulate her mind and body, starting with her mind first. Men are most aroused by what we see, for example... a nice ass. Women are most aroused by what they hear, so one of the best techniques any player can use in these critical situations is "talking dirty". Telling a woman what you are going to do to her before you do it will make her much more aroused than actually performing the act, which is the exact opposite with men... we want to see and feel it, not hear it. Women love foreplay, and the more that you tease her the less chance you have of her leaving or stopping your progress... as long as your teasing is performed properly. Always take things slow and never make any sudden movements, the idea is to move your hands and body slow and smooth while maintaining fluid motion; don't do one thing for too long because this will give her time to think, and I can guarantee some of the first things that will pop into her head are "I've only known this guy for..." and "What will my friend's think", which are obviously not in your best interest. The trick is to keep things happening faster than her mind can keep up, because if her mind is given even a few moments without the need to concentrate on what she is doing, she will begin to think about the current situation and may have second thoughts. Don't forget to keep talking, and always keep the conversation sexual. If you let the topic of discussion drift to something non sex-related then you are screwed, and not the way you were hoping. Whisper your comments into her ear and kiss her ear while your at it, the ear is one of the best spots to kiss a woman to get her in the mood and keep her that way. If you are kissing her body, always work your way back to her mouth every-so-often, and each time make your kissing more intense. Forget about her tits. Feel them for a few seconds, kiss them for a few seconds, and quickly move down below. Any stimulation you can provide to her breasts will not be sufficient to get her ready for sex, so they should only be given a small amount of attention. You can even forget about them all together, and if she has small breasts she will most likely be happy that you did. Before ANYTHING happens (before you sit down) you should always remove any rings/watches/bracelets that you have on so you can slip your hand down into her pants quickly without anything getting "hooked". Forget about her belt and unbuttoning her pants, you can get your hand down there without doing any of that... trust me. If you waste time attempting to undo that stuff she may stop you by grabbing your hand and shaking her head no. You can do all of that later because once she is aroused enough none of it will matter anymore. Once you've got your hand down her pants it's a done deal (assuming that you know what & where a clitoris is). P.S. Be safe and wear condoms! Student Housing - Money Matters

By Ian Byrd Living away from home in a college apartment is an awesome experience. Complete freedom, a few hours of school, and little parent involvement combine for some crazy times. Unfortunately, there is the side of apartment living that is not so fun: paying rent and bills. As a young person, your first year in an apartment will most likely be the first time you've ever had the responsibility of keeping track of and paying for bills. To make thins more difficult, you have to work with your roommates to get it all paid for. Here are a few tips to make sure it all goes smoothly. First, you need to have a meeting to get everyone on the same page regarding rent. Make sure everyone knows how much they are paying each month. Put one person in charge of getting the big check to the landlord. You can switch this off monthly to make it less responsibility, but this will make things a little more complicated. Have a hard set date when everyone's checks are due so that there is enough time to assemble the big check. Keeping on top of this can really help the monthly process. Bills are another complicated issue. Again, you can put one person in charge of all the bills and have every give them their share of the money each month. If someone is responsible and willing to do this, go for it. Also, split up the bills as simply as possible. Obviously dividing it equally is the easiest way to go. Sometimes, however, people will claim that they don't watch cable TV or don't want to pay for certain features that other people wanted. If their claim is true, then let them pay less. Otherwise, stick to a simple payment plan. Communication is key to keeping money matters simple. As long as everyone knows the procedures and people stay on top of it, you shouldn't have any problems getting the rent and bills in. As soon as there is a problem (money is late, someone had to cover for someone) make sure to address it and possibly rearrange the procedure if someone is dropping the ball. VPX ZERO Carb Fat Incinerating Protein - Go ZERO!

By Beth Badore It's always great to find a protein supplement with very low carbohydrate amounts, but it's even better when there are none at all. VPX Zero Carb Protein is perfect, it's got no fat, no carbs, and tons of protein. That means you can supplement more for less. Many supplements are totally out of the question for me as a WLS patient, because they contain HUGE amounts of calories, fat, & carbs! I realize those particular products are meant for those looking to gain muscle weight, and eating a 300-400 calorie bar or just as high calorie shake is appropriate. I suppose if I ever got to a point where I needed to maintain my weight and was having a hard time, I would initiate the use of those big calorically inclined bars and shakes. For now, while I try to shake off the last of the weight, I'll stick to low-zero carb supplements that do not negatively impact my diet. I bought a canister of VPX Zero Carb Protein for $47.95. Save yer pennies. About the protein, from the manufacturer: The most consistent and effective way to lose weight and unwanted bodyfat is by consuming a high protein/low carbohydrate diet (with moderate dietary fat intake). This is primarily due to the fact that protein has a spectacular three-phase assault on bodyfat: 1) protein causes the body to release a hormone that frees up stored body fat to be used as energy called glucagon, 2) protein builds muscle tissue and fat is burned inside of the muscle cell; consequently, more muscle equals greater fat burning capacity, and 3) to digest protein, the body has to expend a great deal of heat; this process is called the "thermic effect" of protein and results in the body burning additional calories even at rest. While it is true that one of the keys to losing weight is to expend more calories than we consume, the most important secret for long term fat and weight loss is to control the hormone insulin. Insulin release is consistent with the amount and/or type of carbohydrates we consume. This hormone also causes our body to store fat and furthermore, can also prevent stored bodyfat from being utilized as energy. Additionally, insulin will cause unwanted weight gain and water retention. However, if we control insulin with a low carbohydrate diet, we can also control our weight and levels of bodyfat. 100% Whey Protein Isolate Microfraction Selection Technology Great Tasting Flavor Zero Carbohydrates Zero SugarZero FatZero Aspartame or Acesulfame K Zero Corn Syrup Solids or Hydrogenated Oils Zero Fat-Promoting High Glycemic Index Maltodextrins Zero Caseinate, Ion Exchange or Other Old-School Proteins Zero Estrogen Promoting Inferior Soy Proteins Zero Lactose - Generally Safe for Most People with Milk Allergies INGREDIENTS: Cold-filtered CROSS-FLOW QUADRAFILTRATION Whey Protein Isolate proprietary microfraction profile comprised of complete spectrum molecular weights for sustained protein absorption and increased nitrogen retention. Create Your Own Metal Castings
by bamby willcock - Saturday, 22 December 2007, 06:59 AM
Anyone in the world
By Colin Croucher Have you ever thought about creating your own metal objects by employing the art of metal casting. It is not as difficult to do as you may think. Right now, there are people all over the globe, learning & practising the hobby foundry skills required for "Back Yard Metal Casting". The renaissance has started; do you want to be a part of it? The ebooks we have written are recognized as excellent resource information ebooks for the home foundry metalworker. They have been written and compiled from real life hobby foundry practice, and written in a way that you'll truly understand what we are talking about. A gentleman called Jim from Utah USA, recently sent us an email to tell us how much he enjoyed the ebooks. "Colin, he wrote, Thanks for taking the time to put this collection of very useful foundry information together. I'm sure it will be invaluable in my quest to do some home foundry work. I do Jeep restoration as a Hobby. Some of the models just don't have parts available any more. That is the root of my interest. I have a small machine shop and enjoy doing the work myself. Regards, James H Simpson (Jim) U.T USA." Like many people, Jim is very aware of the possibilities and money saving benefits when you are able to produce your own castings. Even people who race Radio Controlled cars need to build special replacement parts for small cars, and in doing so greatly reduce parts replacement costs. The hobby shop retailers know very well that you'll be back for spares, and that is the way that they make constant profits from RC enthusiasts. There's nothing wrong with that, But you can "beat the system" by making some of the expensive parts your self. The costs to build a small furnace are not that great... it is possible to build a furnace from scrap steel found around the home workshop. The largest building expense of the furnace construction will be the refractory or furnace lining. But there are ways and means to reduce this cost considerably. It is a known fact that it is possible to save quite a large amount of money by casting and machining products produced in your own workshop, compared to what it would have cost to get special one off items produced at a commercial foundry. Initially you will spend some money, but in the long term you will recoup the initial cost with the savings you'll get by making and finishing your own special cast parts. Metal casting completes the picture for metal workers, it provides the means to take an idea, and develop it through to product completion, right in your own workshop. How rewarding would that be for you? And as Noel from Australia commented recently. "G'day Col, All's well with the e-books, but slowly, slowly, just reading and getting ready to build the foundry and start melting. I had fun melting a bit in my forge, just to see if it got hot enough, but I will start the real foundry soon. I love the e-book package, and I feel it gives me enough knowledge to start having fun... safely. Regards, Noel Watson.Australia". Whether your aim is to cast antique reproductions, vintage, veteran car or motorcycle parts, art castings, your own special projects, or even if you just want to cast for the fun of it. All you really need, is the basic desire to learn, and the commitment to slowly build your mini foundry to where you want it to be. Your metal casting journey can be an exciting adventure, starting with simple projects, then slowly graduating to more advanced techniques and projects. The ebooks show you in detail "how to construct" all of the equipment & tools required to do metal casting in the home foundry. If you are handy with general metal workshop tools, then you are more than capable of building the tools & equipment from the detailed instructions. This info will "never be found" at the local bookstore. A visit to our web site will make you more informed to the endless possibilities you could experience with metal casting. To Lose Weight & Burn Fat - Shakes or Whole Foods?
by bamby willcock - Thursday, 20 December 2007, 11:49 PM
Anyone in the world

By Jonathan Perez After many years of spending hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars, after getting sick on them, and after seeing no kind of results in the form of weight loss / fat burn from them, many have finally realized that they are WORTHLESS. Yet, many are still confused if the supplements that are sold as "Meal Replacements", "Weight Gainers", "natural supplements", and "amino acids" have some good use in substituting for some whole foods to help speed up their goals to lose weight and burn off body fat. Surely you see them in just about every other page in every-single bodybuilding / fitness magazine. Everyone at the gym uses them. Go to any grocery store and they have them there too. Yes, even you have probably used them and / or are using them right now......... Shakes and supplements. Many different "meal replacement" powders and shakes, also known as RTD's, are sold as being a substitute for a real, whole food meal. The makers claim that they are "just as good, if not better, than eating a real meal", which will, supposedly, speed up the weight loss process. They claim to have higher amounts of protein, lower amounts of sugar / carbs, and add in ingredients such as BCAA's, Glutamine, Creatine, HMB, CLA, so on and so forth. They claim that in order to lose weight / burn fat you need a high amount of this and that, and that you can't get those from just eating the right foods. ..... That's what the makers claim. First off, no supplement that is out on the market right now will do the work in burning body fat or losing weight as hyped in the ads. Not metabolism boosters, calorie burners, carb / starch blockers, fat blockers, etc. If you are skeptical, perform a test on yourself: For one month, don't change anything about your training routine or diet habits. Measure your arms, your chest, and your waist with a measuring tape and fat calipers. Take one supplement, and only one. Use it for that month. Then take your measurements again. I guarantee you that your measurements will reveal that your arms or chest didn't get any more toned, and that youre body fat levels will not have dropped beyond what you normally would have burned, regardless of what the weight scale says. So, when a meal replacement shake or powder advertises that it is better than eating whole food because it contains all of these extra "fat burning / weight loss / metabolism boosting" compounds, don't be fooled. Even if it actually contains those ingredients, they don't work as hyped up anyway! Second, meal replacements claim to have a certain amount of protein grams, carb grams, and fat grams. Well, lately there have been several analysis done on many popular supplements, and it has been discovered that many of them do not contain the amount of ingredients as printed on the label!! Just a while back a report was written that a popular "protein bar", that claims to taste like Snickers, contained up to 7% less amount of protein than the label claims. And it contained much more sugar than stated. Many of these makers "skim" on the ingredients to bring the cost down of making those supplements, while lying on the nutrition labels, just to make a bigger profit! Third, the price. A meal replacement powder can cost you up to $3.00 PER PACKET, while it would probably cost you $1.00 or less if you were to eat the same amount of calories from real food. I don't know about you, but I rather keep my money in my pocket. Fourth, and probably the most important out of all, is that powders and shakes contain many ingredients that are down-right harmful to your internal body. In order to make these "meal replacements" into powders and to be able to be stored for long periods of time (for shipping and sitting on the store shelves), many chemicals and preservatives must be added. What do you think happens when you are constantly putting into your body foreign chemicals and preservatives, substances that are not from nature. Your body does not handle well those types of unnatural substances. Instead of making you losing weight or stubborn body fat, all you will get is a bloated stomach, diarrhea, and maybe even fatter, since your body doesn't digest it well. How many times have you drunk a protein shake and 30 minutes later you start to get "gas"? That's your body's way of telling you that it cannot handle that shake. Also, "meal replacements" dont contain vital nutrients that are a "must-have" if you want to grow a healthy physique, such as vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, enzymes, etc. These powders don't have any of those things. Don't believe me, read the nutrition labels. On the contrary, whole foods are natural, they contain all of the vital nutrients that your body requires to get big and strong, they are much less in price, and they won't cause you to go running to the nearest toilet. Without a doubt, if you want to lose weight / burn body fat, forget about those disgusting-tasting meal replacement powders and shakes, and eat real whole foods, just like our ancestors did back before the supplement industry came along with all of their lies. Healthy Diet Plans-Comparisons
by bamby willcock - Wednesday, 19 December 2007, 10:17 PM
Anyone in the world
By Paul Buckley I am sure it comes as no surprise to you that many of us are packing a few more pounds than we should. Putting together a healthy diet plan is a priority for most of us. Doing an internet search for a good weight loss program will return millions of results but who has time to sift through them all? Though a new fad diet or quick-weight-loss-pill clamors for our attention nearly every day, the principles of healthy weight loss have not changed in decades: Eat a well-balanced diet where most of the calories are derived from whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Eat fewer calories than you expend. Exercise moderately every day. Learn to eat that way as a lifestyle and you will lose weightand keep it off! Whether you choose the Atkins Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the Mayo Clinic, the South Beach or whatever the diet du jour is today, they will all include the principles mentioned. The only real difference is in what is emphasized. The Atkins, South Beach and several other diets tout the benefits of 'low carbohydrate' intake. What they're really saying is to avoid breads and other starchy foods and to get the essential carbohydrates your body needs from vegetables instead. Which, of course, is the same thing the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and others have been advising all along. All these nutrition advisors want you to eat about 2 1/2 cups of vegetables every day and only eat till you're not hungry anymore. I've got news for you: If you eat 2 1/2 cups of vegetables, you're not going to be very hungry anymore. So your calorie intake from whatever you try to eat on top of those vegetables is going to be naturally restricted. Add a little moderate exercise and 'Voila!', you'll lose weight. Keep it up and you've switched to a healthy lifestyle that will keep the weight off. So don't get caught up in whatever diet guru is shouting at you today. In the end, they all agree on the basic principles. It boils down to this: Eat Less, Move More, Rinse and Repeat Daily. Staying Healthy on a Low Carbohydrate Diet

Anyone in the world
By Marjorie Geiser It is estimated that about 32 million Americans are following some type of low carbohydrate diet. This is the result of fad diet authors claiming that carbohydrates are the cause for Americas rising obesity problems. The backlash against carbohydrates is a result of the low fat craze that started in the 80s. When consumers started cutting down their fat intake, manufacturers figured out that they could create low fat processed food products that the public would buy. Because these products claimed to be fat free, Americans didnt pay attention to the fact that they were not also calorie free, and as a result, the total amount of daily calories has slowly been increasing. In fact, although the total percentage of calories from fat has decreased, the actual amount of fat intake has increased by 10# per year since 1975! The increase of carbohydrate has also increased, at a rate of 20# per year, mostly as a result of highly processed foods. It is estimated that 3800 calories are now produced for every American man, woman and child. We have evolved from a world of feast or famine, but were in a state of perpetual feast, although our bodies have not changed. We have no defenses against excess calories: Every year, 300,000 to 400,000 deaths in the US are attributed to obesity. Meanwhile, Asian and Middle Eastern populations consume 50-75% of their calories from rice and have some of the lowest rates of obesity and heart disease in the world. People living in the Mediterranean also have fewer health conditions commonly seen in the US. This diet consists of whole grains, vegetables, legumes, nuts and fruits. Their diets are rich in fish and low in meats and poultry. Although their fat intake is about the same as in America, the type of fat is primarily monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil, where Americans eat primarily saturated animal fats. Regardless of the actual advantage or disadvange to following a low carbohydrate diet, there are three recommendations for maintaining good health while following such a diet. The first is to choose healthy fats over the unhealthy, saturated fats, when considering fat intake. Examples of healthy fats would be plant fats that have not been hydrogenated, which makes the fat more solid at room temperature. It is believed that hydrogenation is actually more harmful to health than saturated fats found naturally in animal products. Plant fats would include nuts, avocados, and olives. Oils such as olive oil, canola oil and peanut oil are better choices than fats that come from animal sources, such as butter, lard or bacon grease. Multiple studies over the years have shown that excess animal fats lead to higher risks of cancer, heart disease and other inflammatory disorders. Saturated fats have been linked to increased cholesterol, LDL (the bad) cholesterol as well as to increased LDL cholesterol oxidation. In fact, in January 2004, an Atkins representative put out a press release advising the public to decrease their amounts of steak, eggs, and saturated fast to less than 20% of their total fat intake. The next recommendation to ensure good health is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Although fruits and most vegetables are restricted in the initial phase of some low carbohydrate diets, they are then allowed back in limited amounts. The phytonutrients that come from a diet rich in fruits and vegetables have been shown to decrease blood pressure, as well as protect against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. Its easy to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, once you get in the habit. Examples are; add some berries to breakfast, eat a tomato at lunch, include broccoli with dinner, drink some vegetable juice with snacks, and have a large salad with your meal. The final tip to ensure good health is to eat a diet of whole foods, rather than fall back on the easy snack, convenience foods of today. If Americans had just cut down their amount of fat intake in the 80s, without finding new ways to snack, we may not be seeing the epidemic of obesity we see, today. When people started going on the low carbohydrate diets, they eliminated a large number of calories by eliminating snacking, especially at night, where common snacks are chips, crackers, and other high fat, high refined carbohydrate foods, such as ice cream. Today, though, much like in the 80s, manufacturers are now developing low carb and low net carb snack foods. We can now find low net carb chips, crackers, ice cream, popcorn, even low carb pizza! As Americans start to increase their intake of these foods, we will soon see a slowing of the weight loss many had seen initially. In order to call themselves a low net carb food, manufacturers subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols from the total carbohydrates in the product, rather than produce products without carbohydrate. There is no actual FDA standard for what a low net carb food is, yet, though, so right now its anything the manufacturer wants to say it is. These foods also are very high in fat and saturated fat, usually through hydrogenation. So, not only will calories be added back into the diet through resuming unhealthy snack habits, but they will be calories consisting of high amounts of the unhealthy fats. So, while following a low carbohydrate diet, in order to ensure continued good health, follow these three recommendations: 1) Make most fats you eat the healthy, plant fats, rather than eating a diet high in animal or hydrogenated fats, 2) Eat plenty of nutrient rich fruits and vegetables, which are high in disease-fighting antioxidants, and 3) eat mostly whole, fresh foods and very little processed snack foods, even if they say low carb, in order to avoid hidden and unnecessary fat and calories.
