But theres a term that was introduced years ago and still hasnt dropped from the vocabulary, even in Christian dating circles. Whenever theres a conversation about relationships, it always seems to pop out of somewhere. That term is soul mate. Read romance novels. Listen to popular love songs. Watch movies on Lifetime television, and chances are soul mate will be uttered in some way, shape or form. In fact, entire stories have spawned from the idea of a soul mate. Ever see Sleepless in Seattle? You get the picture. But Im here to tell you something that may not be popular, but I sincerely believe its the truth: Theres no such thing as a soul mate. Now, before you gasp and go storming away from your computer, consider the premise of Sleepless in Seattle. A perfectly happy woman, engaged to a man she loves, spends most of her time lamenting the fact that she may have missed out on someone better. Of course, were led to believe her true soul mate lives 3,000 miles away and doesnt know her from Adam. Yet, destiny and fate must have their way, and incredible circumstances bring them to the climactic scene on top of the Empire State Building, where the two strangers lock eyes and know instantly that they are to be together forever. Fade to black, roll credits and hand me a barf bag! Dont get me wrongI can dig a chick movie now and then. But to buy into the soul mate theory goes completely against what God wants for us in a relationship. For example, my wife and I believe 100% that God brought us together. I am completely and totally in love with my wife. Does that mean I could never love another? Nope. I could fall in love with someone else if I wanted. I could crush everything weve built and separate myself from my family. But I CHOOSE not to. And thats the key. Real love is not at-first-sight, violins-and-bluebirds baloney. Its a choice. Plain and simple. Destiny hasnt preordained our lives, God has. But Hes also given us free will in the matter. Just like we make the choice between serving God or serving ourselves, we also choose whether or not to love someone. But according to popular culture and the media, you dont have a choice. You must search for your one-and-only soul mate. Get all swept up in the romance. Dont be concerned with the real world. And thats what gets a lot of people in trouble. They start believing the hype instead of believing the Truth. Before you know it, theyre throwing away a perfectly healthy relationship for a fantasy. In fact, its my personal belief that a large factor in the demise of traditional family values is the proliferation of such anti-Christian ideas, such as a soul mate, through the media. If I buy into the notion of a soul mate, then I believe destiny has preordained just one person for me. Only one. Anyone else would obviously make me unhappy and unfulfilled. After all, its been laid out for me already. I have no choice. Wrong! What if I lost my wife tragically? I would hope that the Lord would bring someone for me to marry again in time, but if Ronda was my soul mate, then what would that make my second wifesoul mate part 2? See what am I getting at here? God has a perfect mate for you and will help you find them. But He cant make you love them. Thats up to you. For example, we have friends who spent their lives on the mission field. The wife will flat-out tell you that she did not love her husband when she married him. But she knew God wanted them to be together, so she grew to love him over the years and never looked back. Now THATs faith! Do yourself a favorturn off the tube. Throw away those trashy novels. Stop listening to those sappy love songs and dig into the Word! Jesus said I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. He had a plan for me and he has a plan for you. Talk with Him, listen to Him, and Hell lead the way. And when you do find that special someone, youll know that its not destiny that brought you together, but His good and perfect will. So take that Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks! The key words we look for in 2Ti 3:16 17 are these; That the man of God, here we see that the words of God, i.e. The Bible, are power to those that have received the word of truth willingly. There-by, we who believe in Gods word, are made acceptable in the Beloved. Being endowed with a spirit that the world cannot understand. What we, as believers, see cannot be seen of those that refuse to believe, in a Being, of Unlimited power and Vision. 3. When God says Love thy neighbor, He didn't tell us to accept, nor Love, the sinful abominations that they co-mitt. On the contrary, He tells us to warn them, and if they refuse to listen to turn our backs on them, for He will judge. In this final article on the topic of carbs, we will attempt to answer the million dollar question: should YOU start a low-carb diet? * THE EXPERTS
First and foremost, please understand that the majority of physicians in the United States will not recommend a no-carb diet. By and large, doctors are going to follow the generally accepted health practices, and those practices require us to partake of all four food groups. Citing the fact that there are no long-term studies available on the effects of carbohydrate deprivation, the American Heart Association does not recommend a no-carb approach. On the other hand, there are some doctors who look at the results achieved on low-carb or no-carb diets and say (like some of us have): you can't argue with results! * THE RESEARCH
Both sides in the low-carb debate have doctors and studies to back up their claims. The Atkins group has well-done studies proving that their diet results in weight loss and lower cholesterol. The South Beach folks can quote even more studies. Both groups also do a very good job of trotting out some very convincing before-and-after pictures of people (just like us!) who have seen results on the low-carb diets. On the other hand, there is no shortage of research proving that low-carb diets are unsafe and ineffective. A study by Linda van Horn of Northwestern University in Chicago assessed more than 4,000 people in the United States, Britain, Japan and China, asking them to write down everything they had eaten over two 24-hour periods. "Lo and behold, what we did find is that without exception, a high complex-carbohydrate, high-fiber, high vegetable-protein diet was associated with low body-mass index (the standard measure of healthy weight)," Van Horn said. The more animal protein a person ate, the higher his or her weight, she said. It's easy to see that the research conflicts on this issue, as it does on many topics. * THE ROLE MODELS
In a previous article we examined the diets of professional bodybuilders and (female) fitness models. Almost without exception, we found that these EXTREMELY healthy people did NOT eliminate all carbohydrates from their diet. Again, almost without exception, these folks DID strictly limit the intake of 'garbage' carbs (donuts, cake, cookies, etc.). Bodybuilders and fitness models get their carbs from QUALITY sources including brown rice, vegetables, fruit and yams. * PHONE A FRIEND!
Yikes! The experts don't agree and the research doesn't agree! What to do? Let's phone a friend..... Most of us have a friend or family member that has lost weight on a low-carb plan. Sometimes they've even lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of weight. All that anecdotal evidence can't be wrong, can it? As we learned in a previous article on this topic, low-carb diets will help you lose weight! There's enough research and evidence out there now to fully support that claim. But is it the 'right' weight, and is it 'safe' weight? Especially during the first two weeks on a low-carb diet, much of the weight loss is attributable to water loss. Falling off the diet, or introducing carbohydrates back into the body, will result in faster-than-normal weight gain from replenished glycogen stores. Another HUGE concern with low-carb weight loss success is whether or not it is 'safe' weight loss. We're not talking about heart health or cholesterol levels, but right now we're discussing fat loss vs. muscle loss. After all, nobody wants to lose muscle, do they? When we talk about wanting to lose weight, it's just understood that we want to lose FAT! On a low-carb diet, it is very possible to lose far too much weight from muscle and not enough weight from fat. As we've said time and time again, NO DIET IS GOING TO WORK FOR YOU IF YOU CAN'T STICK WITH IT. The Idaho Press Tribune ran and interesting article in defense of low-carbing (3-25-04, LeAnn Coffelt, Your Health section), where some of the challenges of low-carbing were disclosed: carb withdrawal (compared to nicotine withdrawal), hair loss, etc. Perhaps the most intriguing quote of the story was "One of the silliest things I've ever heard is that you will put the weight back on after you stop the diet. Well, of course you will." Before attempting to lose weight on a low-carb (or ANY) diet, you simply must ask yourself 'Can I stick with it?'. If you love pasta and pizza, then the answer is probably no. * THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION
Okay, okay, enough talk about the pros and cons of low-carb life! Should you or shouldn't you 'go low carb'? Sorry to disappoint you, but NOBODY can answer that question for you. You, and only you, know if a low-carb diet is something you can stick with for life. There is, however, a list of questions you can (and should!) ask yourself before taking the plunge into low-carb mania:
1) HAVE I DISCUSSED THIS WITH MY DOCTOR?
2) Do I have a family history of heart disease and/or high blood pressure?
3) Do I have a family history of cholesterol problems?
4) Do I have a family history of cancer?
5) Do I think I can stick with it, even through the 'carb withdrawal' phase?
6) Have I scheduled regular bodyfat tests to make sure I am losing fat and not muscle?
7) Do I have a support system in place to help me stick to my new lifestyle?
8) Have I taken the time to EDUCATE myself on the specific diet, or am I simply following the advice of friends?
9) HAVE I DISCUSSED THIS WITH MY DOCTOR?
10) HAVE I DISCUSSED THIS WITH MY DOCTOR? Low-carb (or even no-carb) dieting MAY be safe and effective for you. Only your doctor can help you answer that question. A sole proprietorship is a default business form. If you start your own business and do not form an official entity, you are a sole proprietorship. Congratulations! If you start a business with another person and do not form a business entity such as a LLC or corporation, you are not a sole proprietorship. You are a general partnership. Just thought I would be clear on that. There are some major advantages to being a sole proprietorship. First and foremost, it is very simple. Obviously, you dont actually have to do anything other than get the necessary business licenses for your area. You can just focus on making money with a minimum of administrative issues. This also makes it inexpensive to get up and running. Sole proprietorships are also very simple from a tax point of view. Since there is no official business entity, the finances of the business are handled on your personal tax returns. You report the revenues, expenses and so on with the Schedule C that goes with the 1040 form. Unfortunately, keep in mind that you will have to pay the self-employment tax, a whopping rate of 15.2 percent. If you are not aware of it ahead of time, it can be a killer when tax time rolls around. If sole proprietorships are so easy, why does anyone form a LLC or corporation? Well, there is a major downside. As a sole proprietor, you are personally responsible for all of the debts of the business. This includes debts because the business doesnt make money and you owe a vendor as well as any judgments arising from a lawsuit against the business. If you were to form an LLC or corporation, you would be protected from such debts even if the business failed outright or lost a judgment for a gazillion dollars. Anyone in the world By Olga Moe Why does God need a gender? Cant we, as creative beings come up with something more majestic than biological anatomy? Doesnt the Holy Spirit transcend flesh? I thought that is what the resurrection was all about. It makes me feel like we are children playing with dolls. Here is the mommy, here is the baby and here is daddy whom we obey and who punishes us when we are bad. Isnt that a rather limiting concept? I like to think that the Grace which generates healing and love is a bit more universal, resplendent and powerful than that. Do I believe that the Holy Spirit manifested as a human man 2,000 years ago and showed us a perception which expanded our earth-bound senses? Yes. For humans to incarnate, we have to come up with either a male or female body. I believe the Holy Spirit could just as easily be a female and in many cases has and still does reveal itself as exactly that. The point is, Spirit itself is universal, so the gender of the vessel it travels in is not even relevant. Once again, we are feeding earthly values into our understanding of the Divine. When we do this, such values become as transitory and vulnerable as we humans are.They are further interpreted and reinterpreted by more humans who all have different earthly interests. They become superficial symbols to represent whatever a persons own self interest is at the time. Therefore, we are back into the mire of fleshly helplessness from which the Spirit came to set us free. Gender is a superficial aspect of an entity, almost an afterthought. Maleness (testosterone) does not even inhabit the fetus until after the fourth week of development. Our biological system is set up so that we need two opposing sexes to produce a zygote from which the fetus starts to multiply itself. End of story about gender. It has nothing to do with the soul, with the spirit, with the capacity to love, with the goodness, energy and power of the Holy Spirit. The latter is exempt from such a very carnal aspect of being. Personally, I dont feel comfortable with God having a penis any more than I do with God using a toilet. Also, there is no need for God to go around procreating a bunch of little offspring Gods. I understand that the notion of a mighty loving Source needs to be compared, at times, to a concept that is recognizable. It is like feeding strained food to a baby, it is reaching people at their level of understanding. Fair enough. But are we really that creatively impaired? Cant we conceive of a force more closely related to what it really is? The Christians have always been hung up on male supremacy, so it makes sense that they would push the idea of God being a male. (Notice that the human, perishable, fleshly aspect of Christ is contributed by the woman.) I understand that for their particular culture at the time of incipient Christianity, the patriarchal society was considered to be most preferable. Okay. But here we are talking only of a social configuration. We are not talking about the Spirit which moves and breathes in us and in all living and non living things. We are talking about the energy which we know before we even incarnate, and which we will know after our incarnation has run its course. That seems vast and awesome to me. It seems greater, more nurturing, more loving, more dependable and more Present than the human male ever will be. But maybe that is just my own opinion.
