Fruit, the Enemy of Those Desiring Weight Loss
by minette prada - Thursday, 6 March 2008, 03:43 AM
Anyone in the world
By Adam Kessler Each week you read in the newspaper about articles concerning the rise in obesity. With that rise, so many people are desperately doing what they can to lose weight. Supplement companies are out there preying on these people with brand new products that miraculously lose weight in so many days. There are new diets coming out left and right, claiming this is the diet that will get that weight off and keep it off. Meanwhile, as nutritionists cringe at seeing all these wacky diets and products being displayed they maintain to eat a balanced diet that usually contains fruit. Fruit has always been viewed as a healthy choice, but is this one of the reasons why people dont lose weight as fast as they want to? I know what youre saying, That cant be. Fruit is..well fruit. Here is the deal and it all breaks down to sugar. Fruit has a lot of natural sugars in it and if people who are looking to lose weight eat a lot of fruit or fruit juices, they could be preventing the breakdown of bodyfat. When you eat something that is comprised of a lot of sugar, lets say Coke, your body is feeling a sugar spike. Your pancreas releases a lot of insulin, which helps to remove the excess insulin and store it in your liver and muscles as glycogen. It usually releases a lot more insulin than necessary. The insulin gets rid of a ton of sugar, so that in a short time, you will hit a low sugar level and will start craving even more sugar. Which means you will probably eat something you know you shouldnt like a candy bar; something that has absolutely no nutritional value or benefit to you. Here is the second effect of that Coke. Your pancreas secretes another hormone called glucagon. It helps to release bodyfat as a fuel for your cells. If the pancreas is secreting all this insulin for the sugar, then it suspends the secretion of glucagons which keeps your fat stored in your body. This is not good. We want to get rid of that bodyfat so you can feel and look better. But fruit is good for you, right? Obviously, Coke has a lot more to it than just sugar, but if you compare 100 calories of Coke to 110 calories of orange juice, the Coke has 27 grams of sugar and the OJ has 24 grams of sugar. Pretty close comparison, dont you think? The orange juice and fruit in general obviously have some other important nutrients in it. Im not saying that it is bad, but what I am saying is that if you seriously want to lose weight you might have to modify your fruit intake. If you really enjoy the taste of fruit have it for just one serving of the day. Also, eat the fruit with a combination of a high protein source. This will help delay the absorption of the fruit and not spike the insulin levels so much. To make up for the antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that you might be missing from the fruits, you need to eat more vegetables. Fruit isnt bad and I dont want anyone to not eat fruit again. But if you are overweight and serious about the weight loss that you desire, you need to take a hard look at your diet and cut back on the sugar that your body is ingesting. Good carbohydrate sources that wont spike your insulin levels so much are sweet potatoes, brown rice, or whole wheat sources. Combine this game plan with a good exercise program and you will be shedding the pounds in no time. The Basics of Money
by minette prada - Wednesday, 5 March 2008, 12:59 AM
Anyone in the world
By Peter Viliamu What is Money? The answer to the question is simple. Money is anything widely used for paying debts owed by a person to someone else and also for receiving the payments of debts owing to a person from someone else. A country produces coins and banknotes, (accepted by everyone) for the payment of bills and for the receipt of money owing. Money is what is known as a "medium of exchange". In the "old days" people traded the goods and services they owned (and probably produced) for goods and services owned by others (probably produced by them). The scenario went something like this - "you give me two sacks of your potatoes and I will trade you ten of my fish". This method of trading was fine for a while. As society developed, business became more cumbersome and inefficient with this method of trade. Business dealings became stilted and slow and lagged behind the new pace of commerce. There had to be a better way. Some bright spark then came up with the idea of a common "medium of exchange" easier to carry around and better to use. Money was born. It wasn't that simple, because while all sorts of things were used as a medium of exchange, these were all basically called "money" and it wasn't until coins and paper notes were developed that money as we know it today became the standard accepted as a medium of exchange. Forms of Money There are various forms of money - cheques, IOU's, credit cards, bank drafts or gold. Gold was the standard used in the past because of its scarcity and its qualities. Gold is resistant to corrosion or damage. These unique properties, as well as the scarcity of gold means that even today, wealthy people around the world would rather keep their wealth in gold holdings than in the currencies of countries which are subject to inflation. In fact, all sorts of things have been used as money throughout the ages. Some include: beads, eggs, salt, pigs, leather, yarn, axes, ivory and jade. Today we have another form of money, which cannot be touched, and yet it as real as the tangible coins we are able to touch. This form of money is electronic money. The Name "Money" The word money comes from the Roman goddess - Moneta. Apparently coins were minted in her temples and issued to the world, as the Romans knew it at the time. The Latin word "Moneta", (meaning mint or coins) came from the old English word "mynet" (meaning coins or money) and from this came the English word "mint". Origins of Money To understand the origins of money we have to go back to a time well before money came on the scene. Money did not suddenly appear - it was introduced gradually in response to the requirements of human needs. As civilization grew and expanded beyond local societies, the need to exchange the products provided by various groups became evident. The hunter needed to exchange with the farmer, the shepherd needed to exchange with the medicine man etc. The medium of exchange that was necessary to enable the various groups to barter and swap their products was money. It was originally a physical substance like gold or silver. Sometimes it was a substance that was alive such as cattle, which was one of the oldest forms of money. Today, although much of the money used by individuals in their everyday life is still in the form of notes and coins, its quantity is relatively small compared to the intangible types of money existing as entries in bank records. Today money exists in the form of digital cash and such things as coins and bank notes will soon become obsolete. When this happens, the change in the nature of money will have a significant effect on our society. Bipolar Symptoms
by minette prada - Tuesday, 4 March 2008, 01:27 AM
Anyone in the world
By Jason Gluckman Bipolar disorder is an illness where a person experiences extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. He may feel manic for an instant and depressed the next. In manic episodes, there is a distinct period of abnormally elevated or irritable mood lasting at least one week. During that time, the person experiences three or more of the following symptoms: grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, pressure to keep talking, flight of ideas, distractibility, increase in goal-oriented activity and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences. A manic person can be reckless and impulsive. He is very self-confident and optimistic. In severe cases, a manic person may even have delusions and hallucinations. In a hypomanic episode, there is a distinct period of persistently elevated or irritable mood different from the usual nondepressed mood lasting for four days or more. During the mood disturbance, the person experiences three or more of the symptoms of mania. The disturbance in mood must be observable by others but not so severe as to impair his occupational functioning and social activities. In a major depressive episode, a person feels a depressed mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure for two weeks or more. Five or more of the following symptoms may be experienced by the person most of the day almost everyday, such as depressed mood, markedly decreased interest or pleasure in activities, significant weight loss or weight gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, diminished ability to think or concentrate and recurrent thoughts of death. The symptoms can cause significant distress or impairment in social and occupational functioning. The depressed person may have difficulty in crying, have countless unprovoked crying spells or he may just be indifferent. He may also complain of aches and pains that may have no real physical causes. Bipolar provides detailed information on Bipolar, Bipolar Symptoms, Bipolar Depression, Bipolar Tests and more. Bowfin-Mysterious Menace
by minette prada - Monday, 3 March 2008, 05:47 AM
Anyone in the world
By Tony Liddle Until recently I never really put much thought into all of the dogfish that I have caught over the years of hunting bass & panfish. While fishing with the great Eric Allee recently, I asked him, Eric, what were you referring to when you used the word "bowfin"? We agreed that he was talking about what I call Dogfish. People may call this interesting breed other names, such as grinnel, blackfish, brindle, mud fish, shoe pike, cypress bass, cypress trout, choupique, scaly cat, bugle mouth bass, German bass, brindle fish, and many more. The Bowfin(Amia Calva) can be found throughout a good portion of the US east of the Mississippi. They run the entire Mississippi River to Canada, east to Florida, and up as far along the coast as New York, but are found primarily in sloughs & ponds on the Mississippi River, her tributaries, and backwaters. Bowfin is a prehistoric fish that dates back 180 million years. Dogfish have many unique characteristics that intrigue people today. One of the most amazing qualities they possess is their ability to breathe air. Yes, I said breathe air. Unlike most fish, bowfin use their swim bladder like a lung to grab oxygen from the air, when oxygen levels become low in the stagnant, muddy, and vegetation rich nonmoving backwaters. Another unique aspect of these fish is that when they first strike your bait it is a subtle bite, followed by a normal fight. Half way into the battle they turn aggressive & unforgiving. At this point you are fooled into believing you have the biggest Bass of your life, especially after landing a few largemouth prior to this encounter. Once the Bowfin breaks the surface, excitement turns into disappointment in a matter of seconds. Males make the nest, watch over the eggs and infant fish until they reach 4-8 inches. The small fish school up, and the male Dogfish protects them the whole time. Their powerful jaws hammer anything getting in the way of their youngsters...even humans at times. Males also have a shorter life span, and are smaller than the females. Bowfin, have large dorsal fins which extend a good portion of their back all the way to their tail. Their tail is paddle shaped, and allows for great swimming, maneuvering, and rolling, as well as fighting when they're on the end of your line. There is a dark circle at the top of the tail that resembles an eye. Coloration varies between normal times to spawning periods. When not in spawn, they are darker & olive color. Their belly is usually an off-white shade, while their fins are bright green. When they spawn, they get an almost fluorescent glow to them, which is pretty beautiful. Dont let the description of exotic coloration fool you. These fish are still around today for a reason. Dogfish are tough and like to lie in most panfish and baitfish laden waters, which are prime honey holes for bass and panfish anglers. These fishermen are often fooled by the Bowfin's tremendous fight. Bowfin remind me of a cross between a beaver, snake, muskie, & catfish. They will eat almost any aquatic creature & strike at will when their nest or young are jeopardized. Theres a good chance that after landing a nice sized Bowfin your spinnerbait, or weapon of choice, has seen its last day in the water. Dogfish destroy anything that comes into contact with their mouths, fight harder than anything youve ever caught, and will tear some meat loose from your body if youre not careful. Their head is large and flat at the top, consisting of a double skull of bone and cartilage. Their teeth are sharp & strong...handling these guys isn't an art...it takes brute force. As you're trying to retrieve your brand new spinnerbait, you realize that this is an extremely difficult challenge, if not an almost impossible task. Because of their bony, strong mouth the spinnerbait, head to hook is virtually destroyed. Dogfish are slimy and really strong...never hesitating to try to bite you at times. Placing the middle of your shoe behind their gills allows proper bait removal...without finger removal. The ongoing argument has always been, release or kill them. My Grandfather used to say, you gotta slit their throats. In my neck of the woods, common practice was crushing & throwing them onto the banks. Some anglers see dogfish as a threat to their gamefish ecosystem. I have not caught one in over 6 years, and now realize that they may actually be good for certain fisheries to thrive to their fullest, and avoid population stunting. After thinking about what I was taught, the manner in which I treated this creature of the mud, and reading some forums on bowfin, I realized this fish is famous and also unknown. Fishermen catch them all the time, never seeing or hearing of one before. Some enjoy the great battle they provide. To others they are delicacies, comparing the bowfin to crawfish, and snapping turtle. "Joy of Cooking" has recipes and diagrams on how to clean and fillet bowfin. The bowfin truly is an amazing fish once you sit back and look at it from both sides of the coin. http://www.fishinsecrets.com Tony Liddle grew along the banks of the Mississippi River, and became a warmwater fishing fanatic. 14 Tips to Cure the Summertime Blues
by minette prada - Saturday, 1 March 2008, 07:48 PM
Anyone in the world
By Jeff Herring "There ain't no cure for the summertime blues." - Eddie Cochran Just the other day, I came up with what I think is the perfect metaphor to describe this terribly hot summer: Its like standing next to a bonfire in a sauna. With that in mind, is it any wonder that so many of us get some version of the summertime blues? So lets look at some of the various types of summertime blues, and then what to do about them. The Plain Ol Summertime Blues Kids dont seem to be bothered by the heat as much as adults. For many adults, the heat saps energy and motivation, wears them out, and keeps them inside. Spending too much time inside is not only unhealthy physically and emotionally, it severely limits your perspective on the world. Many people end up moving only to go from the house to work and back again. What to do 1. Get up and get outside! Be sure to take the necessary precautions, just get outside. 2. If the heat is just too much for you, gyms, malls and theaters are air-conditioned, and get you out of the house. 3. Go do something! How long can you watch other people live on TV? Vacation Blues We behave strangely around vacation time. Somehow we believe that cramming a years worth of leisure and living into a few days or even two weeks is going to be a relaxing thing. Then we come back exhausted, stressed out, and needing a vacation from our vacation. Another strange thing we do is make sure the house is immaculate before we leave. When my dad did this as I grew up, I always wondered if we were getting it clean for the burglars. Now I do the same thing. Why do we do this? What to Do 4. Dont try to cram too much into each day. 5. Think small, aim low, go slow. Relax. 6. Leave the schedule at home. Dump the itinerary and just have fun. 7. One of the most relaxing vacations can be one at home. Its restful and inexpensive. Post-vacation Blues This is what psychologists call post-reinforcement pause. Thats just a ten dollar phrase for getting back to reality after lots of good stuff. What to Do 8. Take several small vacations instead of just one long one. 9.Come back early enough to have enough transition time between vacation and work. Transition Blues For some of us, the summer brings with it times of transition. Life changes such as a graduation, a move, or beginning something new can be bittersweet. What to Do 10. Allow some room for the sadness that naturally comes at the end of one phase of life. 11. Celebrate the accomplishments and memories of the phase of life that is ending. 12. Make room for the excitement that a new phase of life can bring. What are some things you can do now that you couldnt do before? The Weve Got It Backwards Blues Remember when we were kids and had the whole summer off from school? The problem was we were kids, didnt have much money to spend and didnt know what we wanted to do. Now we are adults, hopefully have some extra income and some idea of what we would like to do, and we have to work all summer. Its just backwards, methinks. What to Do 13. Do something child-like. Thats child-like, not child-ish. Having a squirt gun fight in the yard could be a lot of fun and amuse the neighbors, too. 14. Do something youve always wanted to do. Fulfill a dream. Two Powerful Fat Loss Tools
by minette prada - Friday, 29 February 2008, 07:52 AM
Anyone in the world
By Lucas Wold Understanding fat loss begins with an understanding of the bodys systems. Here are two important terms for those interested in fat loss: Steady state refers to an unchanging internal environment, regardless of stimulus. Homeostasis is the steady state of the body under unstressful conditions. For an example, look at body temperature. Homeostasis is 98.6 degrees. If you started running, your body temperature might rise to 101 degrees, and then stabilize, maintaining a steady state as long as you maintain the same effort. Hence the term steady state cardio. Temperature is a basic example, but there are so many advanced cellular processes going on that it will be years before we can understand them all. What is important to know in our goal of fat loss, however, is that the larger disruption we can cause in the steady state environment, the greater the amount of fat that well lose. In fact, we want our body to waste energy. Fat is nothing more than stored energy, and so we lose more by burning more. Heres how: Two of the best tools in your fat loss arsenal disturb the steady state of exercise AND homeostasis afterwards. In short, rather than just losing fat while you exercise, youll lose more all day long! These powerful tools are interval training for cardio and mixing it up with weights. Interval training is a phenomenal training technique whereby you intersperse harder, higher intensity bouts with periods of lower intensity. The simplest method is to warm up, then go as hard as possible for a certain amount of time, say thirty seconds, and then go easier for twice that time. So, run or pedal hard for thirty seconds, go easier for a minute, and then repeat ten times. Cool down and youre done, in about a third of the time as youd normally spend. This is very simple, and when you use your imagination, there are limitless variations. In fact, theres no excuse to do the exact same cardiovascular workout twice! Mixing it up is easier to remember term than non-antagonist supersets. Normally, strength training exercises are paired as opposing motions, so if you curl your arm, in the next exercise youll extend it. This is great for strength gains, but doesnt cause that steady state disruption that were looking for in fat loss. Instead, pair a big movement with another big movement for a different area of the body. Bigger movements use more muscles (and more calories!), and by pairing upper with lower, you burn extra fat as your body has to fuel this more stimulating exercise. Switch traditional long, slow cardio for interval training, and stop going straight through your strength training workout. Mix it up and start seeing results! Lucas Wold is an elite strength and conditioning specialist located in central Washington state. Why Online Colleges are the Choice over On-Campus Education
by minette prada - Wednesday, 27 February 2008, 10:45 PM
Anyone in the world
By Afa Ismayilova Obtaining a long distance education was once thought to be for students with little or no responsibility, or had the ability to be attached to their computer at the same date and time every week, with positively no interruptions. If a family was a responsibility, it was almost easier to drive to and attend classes on campus, as keeping little ones quiet while taking a course was nearly impossible. Fortunately, the internet era has allowed us to morph into the world of asynchronous classes for long distance learning needs. These types of classes make taking online classes very flexible and easily fit into life’s planned and unforeseen events. Long gone are the days in which you had to be at a computer at the exact same time each week. This is how asynchronous classes work. Each week, your online college course of choice downloads a class for you to access at your leisure during a particular week. During this time, you can study and work as little or as much per day as you choose as long as all necessary assignments are completed by the pre-designated ending day of the week. The next week, an entirely new lesson is ready and waiting for you to access, again, when it’s convenient for you. Aside from an asynchronous class schedule, there are other items that require your consideration before choosing an online college. For example, you need to be sure that all classes are fully accredited so that your distance learning experience is a worthwhile one. In addition, there are a few attributes to that are considered to be more of bonuses than an absolute need for a positive, distance learning experience. One such trait would be a staff that can understand the trials and tribulations of going back to school while still continuing on with the rest of life, including work and family responsibilities, and/or making the change from high school to college. Another would be a great tech/class support system in place for your utilization. Available tutoring for those troublesome courses that you’re having a hard time with is yet another. If time is of the essence, your search for the ideal distance learning institute may want to include a rapid or accelerated program to get you down the path to graduation. Many offer life credits to students who deserve them. Of course, being able to take a class or classes when it’s convenient for you allows you the freedom to take more classes at one time. The best online colleges and universities will offer a wide array of degrees in the Technologically-Focused fields, such as internet marketing and web analyst. Since more and more people are choosing to earn their degrees online, it only makes sense that your college of choice offers programs which are moving forward with this fast-paced, ever-changing industry. With gas prices at an all-time high (and consistently on the rise), it seems almost silly for college students drive to a campus to take a course or two when the internet has brought the entire world into our homes. Allowing the World Wide Web to work for you as it has done for so many is just one of the positives to living in present day. A Call to Action
by minette prada - Tuesday, 26 February 2008, 07:01 AM
Anyone in the world
By Johann Christoph Arnold Over the last week I have received dozens of heart-rending and thought-provoking responses to my latest article, and I am thankful for each of them. Personally, I believe the tsunami and its aftermath is the most serious issue now facing humankind. The war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan looks like childs play in comparison. We need to talk about it and share with one another so that it can continue to shake usand bring us together. If you have lost a friend or relative, or if you have friends who lost loved ones, I am especially eager to hear from you. The story of each human being, rich or poor, tourist or native, survivor or victim, must concern us. The question, What about the dead? is burning in many of my readers, and probably in millions of people. One woman who wrote said, The teachings of Christ make it very clear that one must put one's faith in him to go to the Father in heaven. That may be so. But what about those who do not express faith in Him? Can they still be saved, or will they be condemned? I believe Christ's words are always final. But that does not mean I understand them. Indeed, there is much that we humans will never understand. His words reflect a holy mystery that cannot be unlocked by the intellect, but only by the heart. Simone Weil, a Jewish convert to Christianity, grasped this when she wrote: Christ does not save all those who say to him, Lord, Lord. But he saves all those who out of a pure heart give a piece of bread to a starving man, without thinking about him the least little bit. And these, when he thanks them, reply: Lord, when did we feed thee?... An atheist and an infidel, capable of pure compassion, are as close to God as is a Christian, and consequently know him equally well, although their knowledge is expressed in other words, or remains unspoken. For God is Love. It was because of Gods love that Jesus became human, and took upon himself the sin and suffering of humankind. It was because of Gods love that Jesus rose from the dead and liberated a host of Satans captives. Is it our place to condemn souls? Jesus says, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. And Paul says that neither height nor depth, nor death, nor anything, can separate us from the love of Christ. Some of you called my article premature. One reader said, We who have lost kin need time to come to terms with that loss... We have no bodies to bury This is the time simply to hug folk and love them. Another wrote, Our religious order has lost around 130 sisters and monks who worked among the very poor in the affected region. The wounds and grief are raw, and the losses still have not sunk in We need time to weep and mourn and get used to the empty spaces that are suddenly in our lives.. My heart goes out to you who live in the midst of the tragedy. Your words ring true. For those of us who live far away, however, there is the danger of getting back to our normal daily pursuits and blocking out what doesnt directly affect us. To let this happen is to turn a deaf ear to Gods language. Let me clarify here that I do not see this disaster so much as a judgment on the directly affected nations as a call to the rest of us. Let us not act like those described in Johns Revelation, who were not killed by the plagues, but would not repent nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver Nor did they repent of their thievery, their murders, their sorcery and immorality. In this connection I would like to share a short midrash (scriptural commentary) recently sent to me by a friend: As the Israelites crossed the Red Sea to freedom, the Egyptians pursuing them drowned. Witnessing this, the angels in heaven cheered and danced. God silenced them and asked, How can you rejoice when my children are dying? This is a vital point: rather than dismiss as unsaved all the non-Christians who diedand continue our lives unmovedthe only fitting response to the events of the past weeks can be to repent. God willing, my wife and I and others from our church will visit some of the hardest hit areas in Indonesia in the near future, and gain a glimpse of the unimaginable suffering there. We pray that such a trip will change us. You may reprint this article free of charge providing you use the following credit box: Article by Johann Christoph Arnold (http://www.christopharnold.com/). Three Reasons Why Bass Fishing In Mexico Is A Must!
by minette prada - Monday, 25 February 2008, 10:07 AM
Anyone in the world
By Dean Caporella Bass fishing in Mexico is just about the ultimate experience for bass enthusiasts. Why? Well, this is a classic example of when size does matter and the lure of snaring fish at double digit weight is enough of an incentive for anglers to pack their bags and head for the lakes of Mexico.
