Of course perception can be incorrect, and hence we need the keen and quick part of the definition. Take it farther again, and add the humorous expression to the relationship between the inconsistent, the disharmonious, and the incompatible. Now the witty business owner sets himself apart from the crowd, and sets the trend rather than follow it. Look at the success story of Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream. Two guys start making ice cream in a gas station. They make it fresh and good, but they added a twist, they marketed their ice cream using outrageous names for seemingly incompatible flavor mixes and set themselves apart. They took the incompatible and made it work bigger and better. Wit is personified in this business model. Wireless connectivity and increasingly affordable broadband are driving the technology even farther. Whats your connection as a business owner? Simple, your product or service starring in its very own video, online and in the hands (literally) of consumers everywhere. Think of it as a virtual tour of your store. Once you get the customer in and buying, service them with a smile. Heres an outrageous, but effective marketing tip. Send them an Email thanking them for a recent purchase, then link them back to your site and up-sell, cross-sell, any-sell but do it with wit. Perceive their response in store, and express the relationship of their experience and their purchase with humor, bringing seemingly incompatibles together. Heres an example, say you sell lawnmowers. Being a forward thinking business owner, you have Jack fill out some personal information including name, address, email address, lot size, type of grass, maybe even hobbies. Wise having common sense, but also being shrewd and crafty Plan a scheme worked out beforehand to accomplish an objective Action moving, doing, accomplishing a deed Wisdom puts the business owner looking ahead of the pack and of the norm. The Grow-How business owner will, without stepping outside the bounds of common sense, take action based on a plan, to grow his or her business. Whats the application for todays business owner? First of all, develop a plan but for Heavens sake, dont set it in concrete, keep you planning fluid. A business plan, a marketing plan, a financial plan each has a specific task, includes specific material, involves specific players. Each has a format, a goal and a timeline. But stick to any of these plans legalistically and youre likely to be standing on the sidelines as your competitors pass right on by to cash their big checks. Think of each plan as alive, feed it, allow it room for growth, but always keep your forward momentum. Todays rapid business climate will tolerate nothing less. Lets say you own a gift store and your marketing plan calls for display ads in the local section of the metro newspaper from October through December your peak season. You include a 10% off coupon to encourage traffic, and to track the response rate. You have your plan, youre moving forward, and your cost per response is within your expectations wise? Yes, but lets throw in some shrewd and crafty, and see what we can come up with to spice things up, feed the plan and watch it grow. This year, instead of a 10% off coupon, place a 100% OFF coupon. Ever seen one? Probably not most folks just call it FREE. Offer it as a free gift incentive, equal to the average cost of your 10% offer historically. Next, change your placement plan. Instead of 2 months in the local, opt for the more expensive front/national section for a one or two time ad. Study your response rates first to see which weeks stand out historically.
Always have your ads professionally designed, theres nothing quite as sad as good Advertising money being flushed down the drain with a bad ad. Wisdom is key for every business decision you make. Be wise with the money you spend on Advertising. Know your target market, find their favorite reads, surf-spots and so on. Then research the numbers, do the math, make the wise choice. Anyone in the world By Martha Bloom Do you scour your seed catalogs or look at all the new varieties that have come out in your gardening magazines? You cant wait to go to your local greenhouse and purchase them for your garden or flower bed. But when you get there, you find they dont carry that variety. Why not start them yourself? So how do you start? First of all make a list of the varieties that look interesting to you. If you are a newbie at seed starting, try and pick some plants that would be easy to grow. There is no use getting discouraged with finicky plants your first time at it. Also keep your list to a minimum. You dont want to overload yourself in the beginning. Purchase seeds early enough in the season so that you can give them a good start if they need extra time. If seed companies havent been sending you catalogs, then go on the internet and search for seed catalogs and Im sure you can find some sites that will be happy to send you a catalog. Some plants need a long growing season, so you will need to start them early in the house if you live in the northern areas of the country. Vegetable plants like tomatoes and peppers or flowers such as impatiens and pansies. What do you need if you are going to start your own seeds? Clean containers, good soilless seed starting mix, fertilizer, warmth, and plenty of light. You can buy special containers, re-use some from plants you have purchased, or some type of container you have around the house. I use empty milk cartons plenty of times. You can also use the milk cartons for making labels so you remember what seeds are in the container. Do you happen to have some old seeds from past projects that were never used? See if they are still viable by pre-sprouting. Dampen paper towels, spread out the seeds, and put the folded towel in a bag. Place in a warm area and check every few days. If they havent sprouted in 10-14 days, I would give up and throw them out. You can also do this to speed up the germination of new seeds before you plant. Just handle very carefully when planting so you dont damage the root. This is not good to do with very small seeds. You are now ready to plant. If you are re-using cell packs or flats, wash first with a mild dish detergent and then dip in a mix of 1 part bleach to 9 parts hot water, let dry. In cell packs, place 2 seeds in each cell to be sure of getting at least one sprouted seed. If two sprout, snip out the weaker of the two with scissors. Very fine seeds could be spread onto a flat filled to the brim for good air flow. Start at the right time. If started too early, seedlings will get weak and spindly without good lighting. If you dont have a really good sunny windowsill you will need a special grow light to be sure of good growth. When it is time to put your plants in the ground, you will want to harden them off for a few days to prepare them for the outdoor environment. One way is to hold off on the water a little and also place them outside for just a few hours a day, increasing the time gradually. In a week they should be able to handle the outside world without transplant shock. Do you have a little experience starting your own seeds? Maybe you want to try something a little more challenging. How about tree, shrubs, or wildflower seeds? Generally, these seeds need stratification to germinate. That is, they need to go through some cold and moist temperatures plus warmth to break dormancy. Some will want darkness and some light. You need to know the specifics of the plant you want to start. To stratify your seeds try this method. Sow seeds in moist soilless mix in a plastic container with a tight fitting lid or plastic wrap to hold the moisture and prevent spills. You dont need a large amount of mix to get them to sprout. Place in the refrigerator for one week and then remove to let them warm up for a day or two. Place in the freezer for one week and then remove to let them warm up again. Alternate this method at least twice before keeping them in a warm environment to allow them to germinate. If you have some really hard seeds, then you can try scarification by rubbing the seed with sandpaper or an emery board. You can also nick the seed with a knife but be sure not to damage the embryo. Learning to start seeds can be fun and rewarding but it can also be frustrating if you dont take time to learn the basics before moving on to the harder to start varieties. The Meal Deal McDonalds discovered most customers wanted a drink, fries and sandwich. As a result, they developed a pricing structure that was so attractively that almost everyone buys a # 1, 2 or 3. This concept can work for you as well. Bundle accessories and service contracts into the purchase price as standard. Discount the your package only slightly when you leave out an accessory and most consumers will buy the whole package. Offer Free Stuff This bundled approach allows you to offer an extra service ( which costs you very little) free with complete system sale.
This bundled approach will help you set yourself apart in the market place as well. Dont stop with the Meal - Offer a Complete Package Another tactic is to view your product from the customer's perspective. What will they need to maximize the use or enjoyment of your product or service? If you offer these related products, either directly or through a strategic partner, your customer has fewer reasons to go elsewhere. What types of services should you offer? If you sell a product to new homes, consider offering a $25 coupon for a landscape company or nursery with every system you sell. While this is true with some types of flowers, if you stick to the easy to grow varieties you can have a gorgeous garden in no time! Visit your local nursery or check online to discover what flowers grow best in your area. You will want to choose flowers that blossom at various times of the year so that there is constantly some flowers blooming. Before you begin to plant your flower garden, you will need to prepare the soil, which means getting it ready to receive the plants. This should be done whether you are planting bulbs, seeds or annuals. You will want to select a spot that is near a water source so you will not have to carry a bucket to and from the flowers every day. Next, remove any weeds or rocks from your new garden. Using a shovel or tiller turn the soil over. This will let oxygen in and help promote healthy roots. Next, add some slow release fertilizer, making sure to follow the directions. Turn the soil again and you are ready to start planting. After you have gathered the necessary tools, it may be helpful to arrange the plants while they are still in their seedling containers so you know where you want them to go. Now, remove the plants and gently loosen plants that are root-bound. You only want to put the plants as far down as the soil it is in now. In other words, do not get over zealous and bury it too deep or not deep enough. A good thing to keep in mind while planting is that the crown of the root ball should be level with the soil. Now, place the plant into the hole you just dug. Then push down the plant and soil with the side of the trowel or with your hands. You want to make sure the plant is set, but do not manhandle it. Water the plants right away, the plants will be thirsty. Using a low-pressure garden hose or a watering can, try to keep the water on the roots, not the leaves of the plants. When planting, do so either in the early morning or later in the evening. This will help prevent the roots of the seedlings from drying out. If you are going to start your plants from seeds, you will want to do so inside six to eight weeks before you plan on putting them outside. Bulbs for flowers such as tulips and daffodils should be planted in the fall so they have time to rest over the winter and be ready to sprout in the spring. With a little work and a little expense anyone can have a stunning flower garden to brighten up their yard. Nothing adds beauty to a yard or patio like some colorful flowers. Losing weight is no fun but the results can be satisfying to those who overcome their own desires about eating and succumb to the facts of the matter which are these: Obesity is not good for your health. Obesity is not good for your appearance. Obesity is not good for your reputation. Obesity is not good for you PERIOD. Actually, I dont like the word obesity. It sounds like a disease. We should have known it would happen; some professionals are now saying that obesity is a disease. I say that is not so. It is a condition brought on, not by the desires of the sufferer, but by others. Yes, by others. Its not your fault! Never place the blame for being overweight on yourself. Do you hear me? You are overweight because: Your mother always said, Now clean your plate or there will be no dessert for you. You are overweight because: McDonalds built a hamburger joint next door. You dont even have to go in the place. You just walk up to the takeout window and say, Give me three Big Macs, Sarah! Two are for my dogs. You are overweight because: When you were a kid, Billy Brainbreak said, Youre as fat as a pig, Mary! When you roll over in your bed at night, you shake the ground so hard that our hens wont lay eggs and our cows wont give milk. You are overweight because: George Simpleton married Sally Druthers after saying he loved you that night under the big oak treejust to get his way with you. Its not your fault! I know that you want to lose weight. Who doesnt in this day and age? So here are some rules that I formulated for the Big Fat John Diet: 1. Decide that you are going to lose weight come hell or high water. Not only that, set a MINIMUM GOAL WEIGHT that you CAN reach. When you reach that weight, consider it a victory. Then, if you want to lose still more weight, set a new REACHABLE goal weight. For example, I started out at 222.5 pounds in April. I set a goal weight of 187 pounds because my cardiologist in Arizona monitored me for 6 years and he said that at that weight, I had the best medical test results for my heart condition. So I had a reason for setting that weight. You MUST have a reason too. Dont take this as a trivial step. If you do, you will fail. Go to the doctor if you want to and ask him to help you set a goal weight. Okay, ask your barber or hair dresser! 2. Set the approximate maximum calories you will intake each day. I set mine at 1100-1300 per day. You may be able to lose weight eating 1500 calories a day. It depends on your metabolism and on your daily activity. If you live here in Idaho and are putting up hay, you can probably lose weight by ingesting 2000 calories or more a day. Take a multivitamin every day. 3. Make a chart for each week you will be on your diet. I suggest that you make a minimum of 16 charts. When I started the BFJ Diet, I made a chart for every day. It gave me more space to record the type of food I ate, the amount, the calories, the fat content, and whether I liked it or not. I learned that the foods I ate daily were not all that different and that I could get the information in seven columns on a weekly chart. Then I found that I didnt need to record what I ate after about two weeks. (If you stop recording and find yourself getting of your regimen, then IMMEDIATELY start recording again.) I jot my weight down on the chart a few times a week but not everyday. BUT ALWAYS PUT UP THE CHART. I put my chart up Sunday morning. I have a spread sheet where I record my weight at weeks end. I then can make a graph of the chart by simply selecting the data. Have a teenage family member or a friend tell you how to do this. He or she can make up your charts too. Oh, you know how to make a chart and a graph? Sorry! 4. IF you are capable of walking, start walking in the morning and in the evening. Walk at least one mile in the morning and mile at night. Okay, do it all in the evening. You will sleep better. But walk! Stretch your tendons before, during, and after walking. You dont want shin splints do you! You dont have to jog but if you can, why not. There will come a time in your diet where you just stay at the same weight. This will occur after a couple of months. That is the time to increase the distance you walk every day. Add mile at a time until you are walking 2-3 miles a day in one session. Can you walk a little faster? As you lose weight, you will find walking much easier. 5. Do not eat sweets on a daily basis or any other basis. Dont drink more than one glass of juice everyday. Drink glass of milk at a time or just put it on your cereal. If you must have a sweet snack, make it a graham cracker with less than a teaspoon of peanut butter. When you go out for dinner, stay away from desserts. To do this, eat a lot of salad and protein so that you are not hungry for dessert. I eat only one meal each day. I dont eat in the evening unless Im dying for something. Thats when I eat the graham cracker. Yum! Yum! Remember that Marlene Dietrich ate only one meal every three days. She was a snake! I can go all day without eating. That comes from not eating. However, there will come a time when your body will say, EAT SOMETHING OR YOU WILL DIE! Its best to eat at that time. Do you like pickled herring, and such? It makes a great snack. Easy on the crackers! 6. Eat out and pig out at least once a week, but no sweets. Okay, a one-inch square of a brownie is okaybut can you stop from taking another piece of brownie. I say, STAY AWAY FROM SWEETS! When you go out to dinner, start at the salad bar. Thirty years after it was written, Forbes magazine reviewed the manual and called it "the finest sales instruction manual ever written." In his book, Ogilvy on Advertising, he wrote about a French advertising campaign that played itself out on a giant billboard. The first of three installments showed a beautiful woman in a bathing suite with the caption, "On September 2, I will take off my top." On September 2, the billboard was replaced with the same woman now wearing only a thong and a caption that said, "On September 4, I will take off my bottom." By then the entire country was a-buzz as eager men waited to see if she would keep her promise. And on September 4, she did, with a product of the agency's client right beside her.
